Default Want Spare Tire.

I'm going to make several long trips this summer and don't want to do it without a spare. What's the best place to get one? My dealer quoted me $400 for one that fits a Boxster. The one listed for the 997 was double that. Will the Boxster spare fit the 997?

Thanks for the advise.

P/N for 997 is 996 362 020 03
P/N for 987 is 996 362 020 04

Price looks to be the same for each

So, where are you going to put the big flat tire once you change it? My suggestion is get a flat repair kit, small jack and DIY. Look up Dan's kit...I had to use it a week after I bought it.

This continues to be a sore spot for the 997 group.

I'm approaching 36,000 miles on my 06 and travel (obviously) a lot, and into some weird areas. Haven't been stranded yet. (Knock on Makassar).

Check the PCA website "technical" section for options, part #s, & photos. These spares come up on ebay frequently.

Make sure that you bring along a couple of substantial garbage bags and are prepared to shift a lot of stuff around as the tire,--particularly a rear, will never fit in the trunk. You'll have to put it behind the front seats.

It's a serious amount of trouble to give yourself that sense of confidence. I know what you're thinking, but I weighed the factors and just went with a radial tire repair kit. (Practice on other tires first!)

+1

I keep a plug kit in the trunk.

The Porsche electric tire pump is anemic. I'd recommend something more substantial that can be connected directly to the battery.

Between the plug and the pump, you should be able to limp home after most punctures in the tread. If the sidewall gets punctured... well, then a spare or tow might be your only options. The few flats that I've had over 70k miles could all be fixed with a plug that got me to a proper repair or replacement.

A TPMS (Porsche's or third party) can help keep you from getting stranded by warning you of a leak before it's too late.

I carry the 996 spare and a patch kit for my piece of mind. Have a large plastic bag for the spare if needed.

In addition to not wanting to wait around for a tow, my aerokit front end would likely be trashed by the flat bed in the process.

Can't be too prepared.

I have a boxster spare, a jack, a high performance pump and a plug kit.

02 996 came with collapsible spare Large bolt shredded a rear in western jersey 90 miles from home- doubt they would have a local supplier the donut worked well. I was quite nervous about distant travel w the 997 as the plug/goop/compressor would have been useless, picked up the boxster spare ffrom salvage and will transfer to the 997.2 when i take delivery

Does the collapsible spare clear the brakes on a 997.2 S?

Personally, i would pay to hang the fool who decided cars don't need spare tires. Been stuck at 2am, 10 degrees, Sunday morning, 200 miles from home w a shredded 'run flat' that didn't run flat on my bmw. Someone in Germany should be water boarded for this idea.

Ultimately, I agree that to be in the American West without a spare is a bit along the lines of roulette. Why Porsche doesn't understand that all regions of this country are NOT in cellular phone range, nor are spare tires for these cars simply sitting around at every tire shop in the country, is beyond me.

Clearly, someone made a serious management decision that tire unreliability and chance of failure occurrence are remote posibilities,--but we're the ones who have to live with it.

I predict that this will become a growing problem as the 997s start to come off warranty where you can simply dial 1 800 PORSCHE and they will take care of things entirely.

I ask again: Does the old (996) collapsible spare clear the brakes on a 997.2 S? How many miles can it be driven along with the remaining 19" wheel, especially on an LSD-equipped car?
