Default new MB SL class....

Just curious how other P car owners feel about the re-design? I am really liking the new SL looks... the Renntech models are beautiful and the sl6xs are just amazing. For a luxury sport convert touring like car I could see myself considering one of these as another car someday. Just really like the new styling.... anyone have one or test drive one? As a purchase talking a few years old and sl63 or SL600 which at that time can be had for 90K+ ish I bet..... they drop like bricks $ speaking after a few years. Even the sl500 550 600 are so nice IMO....

(not suggesting as a replacement to any porsche, just my personal observations)

New SL 63 is awesome... I couldn't see buying it over an Aston V8 Vantage or a 911 Turbo though. Very pricey...

Different cars IMHO. I have always thought that people are in two camps, you are either in to razor sharp driver involvement (Porsche, Ferrari, BMW M etc.) or more the high quality cruiser (SL, 6 series, most Audis..............). Obviously things are not as black and white and I am sure the redesign will sell well, just not my cup of tea.

The Benzes are just too damn heavy for me to even consider, plus you cannot get a stick = no sale.

I would drive it if it had the body of a Yugo just to have that engine. The 6.3 is just awesome. I was lucky enough to drive the SL and C63 out in Pebble Beach last year. I like the looks of the SL only if it is an AMG (or has the AMG package). The regular 550 doesn't do it for me.

Default reply....

Agreed its not a Porsche as far as apples and oranges (agreed) and in my original post somewhat stated less comparison between the two and just liked the new design etc...

I would never buy new, agreed 100% on high priced but few years old a car with low miles will be in an attainable price point I believe.

SL's (like tts) are great deals when purchaced after the original buyer has already been gored by the brutal depreciation of the first year or two of ownership. As someone who has never bought a used (er, excuse me, "pre-owned") car this is definately something I would consider doing in the future.

The interior is a turn-off. It's your run-off the mill MB interior. I would be bored driving that thing.

That about sums it up. I could have bought a SL550 for the same price as my 997 S, but the MB weighs 1,000 lb more.

I feel sorry for the valet parkers in Chicago. "You have a silver SL63 with black interior and chrome 20" wheels? OK...Anything that makes it different?" They don't get parked outside of restaurants here because it would make the restaurant look like the workers canteen at the end of the Stuttgart production line for SL's. Frankly in this town if you want to stand out buy a MCS JCW or a Lotus Elise.

My brother has a beautiful 500SL - lowered - exhaust - 20"HREs - sweet.

But that thing is a tank. No fun at all to drive.

I have to say that the styling has held up pretty well - they still look terrific IMO.

My last M-B was such a 100% POS that I won't buy any Benz no matter how good the deal is (since they depreciate worse than Porsches do)

Default really?

Really in Chicago? Thought you all would be like us up here in Ma (new england area) where not as many nice cars out and about as one may think for such a city like Boston....second to only to silicon valley for techno boom, great financial sector and other.... still a decent 911 gets my attention...and have never seen a SL63 or SL65 on the roads 09, or even 07, 08 etc....... thats how few nice cars I seem to come across.... Right in the city Boston itself sure come across tons of C, E etc class MB's and 3 and 7 series BMW's but no where is there a lining of 150K+ sl65's or such.... OK maybe in front of Armani cafe on Newbury street ...... but just saying rarely. If you catch a sl63 09 strolling out and about in this area I feel safe in sayting it will get a double and triple take from any even moderate car enthusiast and have almost any Valet person overwhelmed with joy....
