Default Is an "S" Worth $5k More?

Car for car, miles for miles, options for options, is an
"S" worth $5k more than a non-"S"?

Your question is a bit vague. If you are referring to a 997.1 automobile, yes, I think the difference is worth it. For the facelifted cars (997.2) then there is less difference in that things like Bi-Xenon headlights are standard now (extremely good) and the engine output is up to nearly the earlier S output of 355. The car drives best with the 19 inch tires (IMO) and upgraded suspension tweeks and makes for a well sorted out premier sports car. Without the 19s and suspension adjustments it drives alright, but not the same.

One should always attempt to test drive as many samples of these cars as they can to determine what feels best to them, personally. I know that this can be difficult to do, but it's very important. I, for one, am glad I ordered a cabriolet this time, instead of a coupe. I find the coupes too stiff for my taste and the cabriolet as I equipped it has been perfect.

Europeans tend to order basic cars over the S version as prices are much higher over there, and they don't have the advantage of our more lenient tax code and producer subsidies.

Absolutely.
I think the original price jump from non S to S was in the $10-11k range.
$5k on a used one sounds like a no brainer.

The larger 996TT sized brakes alone are a big bonus if you track the car -

NO.

Not unless you want or even need the bigger brakes and xenon lights. Doesn't matter if you are getting them at a discount; if you don't need them then why pay anything for them?

History shows that the base model actually has a slighly higher residual than the 3.8. And that has always been the case for any car I have ever seen in any category (including Porsche).

Thank you all for the replies.

The Non "S" that I have been looking at does have Xenons,
19" Classic Carrera Wheels, Bose, Heated Seats, Chrono, and is CPO'd.
It is not a basic Carrera "stripper," so to speak.

I have been searching for primarily the "S" models. However, after
looking around and driving both, the non "S" feels the same.
In fact, having a few less options, while still being fairly loaded,
may be nice as the car ages.

Don't be misled by what you read on this forum. There is an incredible amount of conceit hidden in even the most benign appearing posts and recommendations.

Typical advise is 1) go for the S instead of the base model 2) the S has a higher residual value 3) never get a tip no matter what unless you only have one leg and one arm (one person here has to continually apologize for driving a tip (now PDK) by explaining that he has only one leg) please give me a break. 4) get a clear bra for your car 5) Even the friggen' color of your side markers is an issue of contention--it should be clear and not orange.

Oh and there's more, much more....

Nobody ever wishes they'd bought a smaller television.
