Default 1st Track day of 2009

I went up to Summit Point yesterday to instruct for the BMW CCA. This was the first time I attended this event without my M3 (which I sold to buy the C2S). I took the Porsche out for two of the Instructor sessions and blew away all the BMW's, including the new M3. In the morning Instructor session I passed all the other Instructors. In the afternoon there was another Porsche, a 993. It had "R" compound tires and he was a tad faster through the corners, but not on the straights. Again, I had all the BMW's for lunch.

After each session, I parked the C2S and the next time I started it up the car emitted huge billows of white smoke from the exhaust. It went away after about two minutes, but it looked pretty bad. Anyone know what could be causing that??
TIA,
Mr. B

My friend had same thing something about if you drive very hard and aggressively, and perhaps had a tad too much oil in the car, some of it spills over and burns off his did same thing and it went away in like 5-6 minute of letting the car idle

It the oil separator, there is a part available from Porsche Motorsport that is basically a much larger reservoir. The problem is even worse on boxsters and caymans because the motor is flipped.

Run the oil level at about 1/2 on the digital meter and let the motor idle for several minutes after each track session.

After each track session I drive slowly around the paddock for a couple of minutes and I let the motor idle for a few more minutes, but I still get the white smoke. I will look into the larger separator as a possible solution.
Thanks,
Mr. B

MR, B,

That is normal when the car has been "ridden hard a put up wet." As has been stated ^ "let the motor idle for several minutes after each track session" (a.k.a. extended cool down to burn off the excess oil) and that will help reduce/eliminate the white smoke on the next startup.

Welcome to Porsche ownership. A very distinct characteristic.

Thanks,

You need to let it idle longer. Also... do not apply your parking brake.
Change your oil ASAP.

Put the x-51 oil pan.... you'll have more consistent oil pick-up.

I was told to replace the oil separator with the "Porsche Motorsport Separator."
Guess I'd like to hear from someone who already did it, or put in the X51 oil pan.

I'm fairly new to track days. What harm occurs to the oil which prompts this advice?

actually the AOS and the x51 pan has nothing to do with what you described of smoking upon turning on the car.... the smoke is more of the horizontal boxer engine layout... where the oil has a tendency to sit in the cyliders. The trick is to have the least amount of oil sit.

The AOS (motorsport) and x51 is more for when the car is driven aggressively on the track. On the caymans... the car can be driven really fast and people are really pushing the car passed it limits (especially on high g's), oil then gets through the aos (The motor sport version is taller, harder for the oil to get through on high g's). The oil then gets sucked into the intake (smoke while cornering). The x51 is to make sure there are no oil starvation issues when tracked.

For the smoke during startup... make sure you go through the cool down lap easy and let idle for a minute or so before shutting off the engine.
