Nothing there yet because few if any of the 997 cars NEED plugs yet! If I were there I would post something, but I only have 34,500 racked up now.

Yes. But the service booklet says they should be replaced after 4 years or 60K. Timewise a lot of us should be at that point. So is that the thing to do or go with milage alone?

I asked about that when I bought mine, since it looked virtually impossible. They said you have to drop the engine first, not something I am likely to attempt myself.

Unhappy

On the 997.2, 3.6 engine, one will have to remove exhaust manifold together with the catalytic converter to which it is welded. Then spark plugs can be reached. This was not necessary on my 996 (MY 2000). I could change plugs on the 996. I think it's not user friendly and a step backward.

i dont buy into that... spark plugs dont break down over time like oil, brake fluid, coolant, etc

I don't buy dropping the Engine. The cost for replacement of the sparkplugs are about $300.- A dealer will charge you must more if he has to drop the engine.

I'M glad it is "only" $300. I was thinking a 4-figure price point for the work.

guys - "dropping the engine" just means putting a jack underneath the engine (if they don't feel like using a proper engine support tool) and loosening/unfastening the engine mounts. There's no mystery or drama associated with it - it's just two bolts.

I changed my spark plugs on my 2005 997. It is DIY but takes some work. I believe that Renntech forum has the DIY for the 996. It is the same. Basically, I removed the rear tires and the heat shield covering the plugs. You do have to use a "angled" socket wrench "adapter" to reach a couple of the plugs because the space is very limited. Very doable but a pain. Hope this helps.

Good to know. Maybe its worth the $300 if that's the cost.
How many miles/years on the car?

Default Spark Plug replacement

Had about 48,000miles on my 2005 997 when I replaced the plug. I simply didn't want to wait till 60,000miles

The dealer replaced mine at 40K miles and 4 years for $450.

The maintanence book recommends 60K or 4 year whichever comes first. Whether its worth it or not, who knows.

Maybe its my imagination but after I had it done the car seemed to have more power.
