Last night our general meeting was held at Holbert's Porsche/Audi/VW and the topic was the PDK transmission. Paul Gagliardi from PCNA provided a cut- away display PDK Transmisson and a power point presentation. Some of us also got to drive one!!!

It was pretty cool. I have not had the pleasure of driving a Ferrari or other car with this type of trans, but I can say that the Porsche seems to work very well. The upshifts at 7k were really fast, and the trans seemed to like to be run hard. It would also downshift nicely, blipping the throttle as it went, but not as much as one would on the track. All-in-all a huge step up from the tiptronic and certainly a great trans for the up-coming Panamera.

Cool! I had a student recently with one, but I didn't drive it. Seemed to work very well for what it is.

I have driven a couple of them, one at a track last year, and I too like the trans in the 997.

I tested drive the Carrera 4 PDK not long ago. It's a huge step up from Tiptronic, much much more responsive and fast in shifting.

However I still prefer manual because I know EXACTLY the kind of torque I get at the EXACT gear I am in. Granted one can use the manual mode of PDK to achieve that too.

Too bad Porsche has the manual gear selector going the wrong way ie forward to upshift when it should be forward to downshift. Even the Mazada we rented last month at Sebring had it correct.

As a PDK 997S owner I have noticed that when the car is in the Sport Chrono PLUS mode and is downshifted at higher rev it seems to blip the throttle more than at other times. All in all when in this mode and driving hard it rev matches perfectly and does not up set the car under hard braking.

Our local dealers [all four of them] bought a fleet of PDK cars out to our Potomac club race last October, and offered rides to anyone who wanted one. The PDK was impressive on all of them, but the cars that had the Chrono option were a class apart. The Sport Chrono PLUS mode is exceptional. Downshifts under solid braking were snappy but perfectly matched. The chassis setup was impressive too. I'd jump at the opportunity to drive one in earnest. Suspect it would be an absolute blast!

I have had a chance to drive the PDK as well as some of the prancing horse and Aston Martin versions of paddle shift/auto paddle. PDK is the best IMO. Worth the $ and sport Crono while not required for the system to work well is also well worth the $. I have not seen anyone come away disapointed with the PDK street or track use.

I have to agree. Industry (and racing) have adopted the paddle shift method. Leave it to Porsche to flub it up and make thumb selectors and backwards.

The irony is fitting.

Have you driven a Ferrari California? No other Ferrari is currently available with a double clutch transmission.

pardon, "Some other cars with paddle shift trans". That I know of Aston does not have a DC ether. will edit original post. Most builders also make paddle shift systems that vary much so driving one Red car with paddles does not mean all.

I found the buttons a bit odd at first too but after a few days of playing with one on and off track did not give the button thing another thought as it became natural. I thought "upshift" or "downshift" and the fingers did the middle managment thinking without further translation.

All I know is that cars with extra gizmos like these are to be avoided after their warranties expire.

The salesman at the dealer didn't let me leave without driving one. I agree the thumb selectors are counter-intuitive and simply backwards.
