Subw00er:

The dash change is part of the model change 996 to 997. All 04s are 996's. Most 05s are 997s except for some things like C4S and turbo models.

Very minor running changes between the 05's and the 06's.....early 05's cant play MP3's, some people won't buy the first year model on principle.....The 05s are out of warranty for the most part, I think this explains most of the price diff between the 2 yrs

It's been reported by a couple mags that there is a strange movement in the rear of pasm '05s in spirited driving situations.

I think Excellence was one of these.

Based on the ease of adding the shifter/exhaust later, I will open my search up a bit (BTW, what does the sport exhaust cost from Porsche, and can I install it myself if I jack the car up? I am fairly mechanically inclined and have installed shifters/pads in my other cars, so I should be fine. I never installed an exhaust though, and I'm wondering how you tap it into the brain in the car so it activates when the sport button is pushed.).

I also have to nail down what changed from 05-06 but it looks like it may be worth looking into it. 05's with 20K miles are in the low $40's and that would really make it easy for me to get into the car. I noticed in some of the pics that it looked like the dash changed. I much prefer the '06 dash and steering wheels (although I still think it could be a lot more inviting/interesting).

So I need to look for a car with these options then:
-05-06 Carerra s
-manual
-Any color considered, except silver (I've had too many silver cars). The brown color Porsche sells is REALLY nice I think.
-Sport Chrono
-PASM
-Heated sports seats

Rear wiper and steering wheel controls is a plus..!

Wish me luck and let me know if any of you see said car.
When you are looking at '05 cars MAKE SURE you are looking at the 997. Porsche did make the 996 in '05, but only in the C4/C4S, Targa, and Turbo versions. There should not be a noticeable difference to the dash between an '05 and an '06 997.

The actual muffler removal/install is not complicated. Installing the wiring and vacuum connections will take longer than installing the mufflers. There are some TSB (Technical Service Bulletins) on Renntech.org that will help a lot with that part. You have to make a donation to Renntech in order to access the TSBs but I think it is only $20 or $25. Well worth the cost.

Good luck with your search!

I'm a Porsche noob too; looking for the right 997 C2/C2S in Florida.

Lots of cars around but many with stories..... I keep thinking that less is more and I should get a C2 but there appears to be more value in an S. I have a line on a modestly equipped USED 09 C2 PDK Launch with about 9000 miles on it @ $70k but I'm seriously considering a leftover '08 just to eliminate the concern of getting someone's problem child. Decisions, Decisions, Decisions......

I realize no one can tell me or anyone else which car they should buy or how much they should pay but I really appreciate the useful opinions on this and the other boards. I can't wait until I find a thread that I can actually contribute useful information to.

They have it listed for $70K. What is the real value of this car? Its at a dealer.

P77 - Leather Sport Seats
- Wouldn't buy a car without leather. It is much more durable.

431 - 3-Spoke Str Whl Multifctn lthr
- NBD

XSC - Porsche Crest in Headrest
- If I can't see it when I drive...

XRR - 19" Carrera Sport Wheel
- Pain to clean

XLF - Sport Exhaust System
- A must

XCZ - Sport Shifter
M6A - Black Mats - Porsche lettering
267 - Self Dimming Mirrors
670 - Navigation for PCM
- Does the same as a $150 Garmin

666 - Module for Telephone PCM
- Does the same as "speaker" on your cell phone

640 - Sport Chrono Package Plus
- Worthless except reminding youself what you drive (see avatar)

446 - Wheel Caps with Colored Crest
342 - Heated Front Seats
680 - Bose High End Sound Package
- Add a Dension for your Ipod

I agree with the previous replies - Low 50's

PMgoodwin. thanks for the funny reply and heads up on the Dension. I love when adapters cost more than the device your adapting.

BTW, is option 666 - Module for Telephone PCM useless? It looks like I have to buy a SIM card to make it work? It wont talk to my iphone, right?

I believe you can pull the Sim card out of your phone and it will work. Otherwise its a seperate Cell number.

You don't need to use an Ipod. A USB flash drive is all you need. The USB takes a little more work on your part to set up play lists with an application like WinAmp (freeware). This just makes the price difference even greater. The Dension, IMNSHO, is a bit pricey. But, Having all of your music collection at your fingertips is worth it.

BTW: the first time you replace tires the Dension will seem cheap

Dension rocks. Great features and rather easy to install yourself.
Was definitely worth the money.

Default Just a point of reference

I just purchased an 07 C2S coupe 6 speed with 15100 miles (meteor gray with black partial leather, self dimming mirrors, Nav, Bose) for 55000.

Porsche sport exhaust can be bought for around 1,800, I think. You could easily install the exhaust itself in an hour or two. In order to hook it up electronically to the system so its switchable requires quite a bit more work and probably wouldn't be fun on your own, and the computer has to be reprogrammed at the dealer. I added mine after purchase and its on (loud) all the time, no switch.

FYI, I am about to get killed trading my 05 997S (specs below), 42K miles, but I haven't negotiated the number yet.

I paid $65K for my very well optioned 2005 C2S. Wow but a year and a depression will do to a car.

Although I agree with everyone's assessment on how easy some mods are on these cars, I respectfully disagree with most people here. I went for a car which had everything I wanted already, for three reasons, first they are all Porsche parts, second they are all covered under the CPO and lastly, I want to drive not buy it and start looking for parts and weekend projects. As far as the price goes the extras will be massively discounted compared to their cost new.

I am also glad I did as my PSE went out shortly after I bought the car and Porsche replaced the entire exhaust for free.

Plenty of cars out there, buy the one that is exactly the way you dreamed it would be.
