Robby Gordon's Hummer is stealing the show away from the big dollar teams (Mit, VW, BMW) and is currently 5th overall. The last few stages will play into the Hummer's hands...2WD, more suspension travel, better in the dunes than the 4WD.

How does 2wd confer an advantage in the dunes?

We saw the race start in Buenos Aires on the 3rd. There are some awesome machines, no Porsches that I saw however. The day before the race all the bikes and cars ran down Avenida Callao right in front of our apartment. You could stand in the street and see them up close as they came by.

The Dakar is a gruelling rally and worth checking in on. The official site is www.dakar.com

Per the current rules, 2wd allows more suspension travel (good for the whoops and bumps in the dunes), wider tires (to float on the sand better), and onboard air pressure control (so drivers can deflate/inflate the tires without stopping). All those add up to an advantage on the dunes.

Ahh - I did notice that the H3 has a more off-road look with the travel etc.

Thanks

Excuse my ignorance but didn't the Dakar event used to be held in Africa?

I think I read somewhere that because of security reasons they decided to cancel the event.

I guess it's been moved to So. America (a lot safer from a terrorist perspective; relatively speaking)

exactly. The rally is still called Dakar, but was moved to S. America for security reasons.
