You have $50K to spend on a reliable sports car that can be new or used, that will be driven low miles each year, but some trips will be up to 2000 miles long, and the vehicle will be used all year round through midwest winters. Ideally would be a "targa" or convertible.
I think a Targa, preferably a 4, I am not sure if older Targas are available in this configuration. My reasoning is as follows, midwest winters are known for cold and adverse climactic conditions. Hence, the 4 wheel drive justification, if available. In addition, the roof allows a great deal of light to enter without any exposure to the cold, giving you the open like feel. In addition, the Targa would probably be more quiet for those long 2000 mile long trips. Likewise, another benefit is the increased luggage room available that the convertible has to sacrifice to accommodate the retracting roof. Plus, don't you already own a Cab?
The Cab would go in an attempt to balance out the "fleet". I had on paper considered a previous generation Targa, but to have awd would mean either a 964 Targa 4 or jumping back into a 997 Targa 4/s.

I owned 993 and 996 Targas and still love the concept. 996 Targas did not come in 4 versions.
First 997 Targas were 2007, I think, so the depreciation curve hasn't quite caught up with your budget. Plus so few were made, it is probably not easy to find one.
I think you could find an earlier 997c4s close to your budget and that's what I would do, or spend a little more for a 997 Targa 4 or 4s.
For the Midwest I still have this hankering for a 993 Targa. The idea of the glass roof, so even on cold sunny days you get plenty of light. And I have a soft spot for the 993 as the last air cooled 911. And I'm guessing that road trips would be fun too.
A 996 has less appeal as I owned a 996 C4S Coupe. Great car and in many ways I wish I hadn't sold it, but the glitter of the latest thing pulled me towards a 997. In some ways it's the middle child: not quite the solidity and heritage of the 993, nor the modernity and sophistication of the 997.
A 997 would be an option, but only a Targa I think, bearing in mind what I already have that the "new" car would replace.
