Default How long before I should replace tires?

I have 11,000 miles on my original pirelli's. I still have quite a bit of tread left on the outside of the tire but on the inside i'm at the wear bars. How long do I push it from here? Can they last another 1,000 miles or more? Just wondering what others have done, I know I've seen some pictures on here of people going too long and having the cords exposed. I don't want to do that, but I also don't want to replace them too soon. Also, is everyone able to have their fronts last as long as two sets of rears?

If you are the wear bars (3/32") it is about time.
Could you get another 1k, it's possible...

TireRack has some nice videos on YouTube of the reduced stopping distances when tires have low tread and roads are wet. I don't know where you are located, but if your weather is turning wetter and/or colder, its probably not wise to stay on those tires. However you probably can get another 1000 miles or so out of them if conditions are safe.

Rear tires seem to wear faster than fronts on Porsches. Especially if you use the go pedal a lot.

Time is now. I'm surprised you even question this when you can see the wear bars...

If you can plan ahead it's best to replace them just before you head into winter/rainy weather. These cars perform extremely well when shod with good rubber,--don't take chances with marginal rubber,--or you WILL lose the back end.

Get a proper wheel alignment after you put on the new tires. The uneven wear is most likely due to alignment (ie. camber).

A few days after I replaced all four tires on mine I put it on the rack,--and all the numbers were within spec. It's mine to know that even after 30,000 miles the suspension can maintain alignment values.

Ahh, p-car driver, I think you meant "increased"..... Anyway, low tread + rear engine car + water = potential for off-road exploration.

Correct. I was thinking reduced braking performance but should have typed increased stopping distance. Thanks for catching it.

Replacing the tires is the most expensive maintenance the car requires. I am on my 4th set of rears & 2cd set of fronts at 33K miles. I try to change them out when over 75% worn. I have not had any issues with uneven tread wear.

Any thoughts on buying tires from Costco?

I would certainly give them a call, but it would be doubtful that they would be able to get in tires that would be considered rather exotic. Good luck, though!

Just looked at Costco -

Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's -
235/35 19's - $370 each
295/30 19 - $565 each

I beleive that includes everything except tax. Is that model what Porsche puts on the vehciles from the factory?

Default Check for an "N"

Michelin, like Pirelli, Bridgestone, and Continental, make tires specifically for Porsche. These have an "N" suffix to them. What the differences are exactly between "N" and non "N" tires is not clear. But the better approach might be to play safe. Check with Tirerack also as they usually are competitive on prices.

I've purchased PS2's from COSTCO this past spring. They had to be special ordered, but were in stock and delivered within a week. In the fall when I needed rears, they couldn't get them...... so I went with Tirerack and had them at my door within a week...... Took em to Costco where they were installed and balanced for $8/ea.
