I couldn't agree more! It's amazing what you discover about the car and more importantly your own potential at the track. It actually makes me laugh when I read of people on this and other forums who crave more power out of their 911 yet have never taken it to the track. For most of us average middle-aged guys, these cars a much more competent out of the box than we are as drivers and no public road exists in North America where one can safely and responsibly start to probe those limits.
Dave, with all the money you're saving canceling the TT, think of all the DE's you can indulge in!

Nah, your 997S would run rings around a spec Miata, but most of the hard core Porsche track guys always end up in them because its super affordable and you won't cry if you hit a wall in it.

if you have a box, gut it and make it into spec box. it's slower, but fun and cheap to run.
you said track will be part of your life for a long time. then dont track the C4s. either track the box or trade C4S to a GT3. if you do 20+ days a year, the GT3 will be cheaper. you need more suspension, sway bar and blah blah on C4s (trust me on this, if you keep tracking for 12-18 months, the mod cost on c4s will allow you to trade c4s to a gt3).

for DE, there's no need for trailer of any sort. racing would be different.

good luck and welcome to the black hole of track driving. $150k for a TT is miniscule in total cost of tracking. oh.... i am not supposed to scare you ;-)

How do you see the reliability of the motor vs the cost for a new crate motor?
I know of a '99 996 with 185,000km (120,000 miles or so) - mostly track. Still original engine. Present owner usually drives with Michelin Pilot Sport Cups.

Ok one voice on the other side: if you find you are continually upgrading cars, the personalized TT may be your final destination.

You could get the TT but vow to NOT upgrade again for a long time....

(well, at least that's my plan...)

When 1 out of 4 have to replace a motor, it is not a good thing.
From what I have been reading, the 3.4 motors are more likely to fail.
If this is so, how much can a 99 c2 be worth with a blown motor? I guess 5K at the max.

^ it depends, if a person pays 10g for a 911 with a blown motor, then it's worth 10g.

what about a base carrera(997.2) with some decent options right from the factory like the new pdk(quicker shifts) the PCCB(better braking), and PSM(better stability). decent cars with 345hp, and it can still be decent for daily driving. and be well under 150g, i think it'd be under 90g. and then you would still be able to take probably over a season to really get a decent handle on the car, and learn it enough to upgrade it a little more.

now i got a question(not to highjack) does porsche void a warrenty if they find out that you've been to a track with a vehicle of theirs, or do they just expect it?

For me the differences of the 997.2 aren't enough for me to want to trade in. I'm also not ready to go PDK at this point in my life...maybe one day.

As for the warranty,....I think Porsche is generally fine with cars being tracked. If however there are multiple high range overrevs then all bets are off...or any other signs of abuse. Most tracking is not abusive in nature,...it's what the car wants to do.

Dave, sounds like a well thought out plan. The TT wld certainly be great; but a car & set up for DEs will be great fun too. I can empathise. I got into a Porsche touring car with the idea that I could use it as part of our usual lifestyle and have some of the P experience (ie DEs, etc). Its kind of fun to see the double takes when a 997 Targa is at tech inspect, staging, running, etc. It acquits itself well actually but the best part is that since it is not the fastest I do not have to be and can concentrate on learning [so when I am faster with the right car... ;-)]. My thought was too convince my wife that this (DEs, etc) would be fun, give her the T, and then get the car I want for track. Very happy to say that so far its working [see the following: http://forums.timezone.com/index.php...=4033441&rid=0 ;-)]. Now what the next car/transmission will be, that is a good (but fun) question. Best and keep having fun.

what if you got a 992.2 CS with pdk, pccb, and psm, that'd be a decent track car, and still daily drivable, and i wanna say still under 100g. 385hp same power as a 996.2 gt3

Most who have PCCBs have swapped them out for steel rotors when doing a lot of tracking due to cost.

997.2 w/385hp may be the same power as a 996 GT3 (mk 2) but it doesn't have the higher redline and especially not the adjustability of the suspension - specificially camber.

Get a ride in a well driven GT3 on a track. You'll immediately see the difference.

How do you know you are looking at an unbiased result?

Sorry to hear the news Dave. I wanted you to get the TT for the selfish reason that you would post vids, pics, and articles on your website so I could see

Good to hear you got the track addiction going An expensive addiction it is!
