Here's what happened to me today:
After not driving the car for a couple of days I started it up and noticed that it felt weak on start-up, like a failing battery. So, I drove for 20 minutes to charge it up, parked to run an errand, then jumped back in. At this point, it was dead.
I called the Porsche 800 number and they sent someone to give me a jump start.

That worked, so I drove immediately to my local Porsche dealership (Porsche of Arlington) and they took me right in. They said I needed a new alternator AND a new battery!! They did the work right away, under warranty, and I was good to go.

Has this happened to anyone else with a 2 year old car??

How many miles a year do you drive?
Do you use a battery charger?
Do you lock the car when it sits in your garage?

It is my understanding that these cars chew through batteries and Porsche is hesitant to warranty batteries if you're not using a recommended charger and/or not driving at least 6,000 miles a year.

So, if it happens again, it' undoubtedly the wiring harness.

I drive it a couple of times a week, but I'm going to pick up the pace & drive it more.
I don't use a charger and I don't lock it when it's in my garage.
Even tho I haven't been driving it a lot (and that will change) it has been to the track at least four times.

I had something similar happen to my (almost) 4 year old 2005. Dealer replaced the battery and alt under warranty; also the cable that runs from the batt to the alt (?). They said that some cars had a crimp in the cable causing problems.

I contacted the dealership that sold me the car, i.e. Brumos Porsche in FL.
They checked with their Service people and here's what they said:
" (1) the alternator issue is more a track issue.. It is getting over heated maybe, but that is a mechanical issue, Alternators go bad...
(2) yes there have been some harness issues but the symptoms are, warning lights going on and off with no problems, so if your dash is lighting up like a Christmas tree for faults but the computers says other wise, then it is the harness... of all the 06 we sold only 1 harness...."

Hope this proves helpful.

Default Alternator / Battery Replacement

It is important to keep the battery charged on cars that aren't driven very often. Alternators aren't really designed to charge batteries that are deeply depleted on a regular basis and as a result, can fail. Failing batteries can also put an undue burden on an alternator as well causing it to fail. Trickle chargers are a good investment for weekend cars.

I have just over 30,000 miles on my 06 which I have been driving since June 06. Am I in danger of not driving it enough?
