Default Open/close window/sunroof from outside?

Early 2000, I think, VW was running an ad on TV about their car's ability to open and close windows/sunroof from the outside with a key. And I said to myself that is a great feature. But my then an almost a decade year old 91 Mercedes E-class has that feature, which I still drive to this day.

My 996 had this feature, but why the heck our 997 have been deprived of this useful feature? I guess the obvious reason is to save costs. Some posts said that pressing & holding the unlock on the key can activate the feature, but that's a BS.

We can open and close windows only, with the key!

Pressing and holding the unlock brings both windows down on mine - but does not close them in a similar fashion when you lock it - sunroof - neither.

If you invest in the SmartTop than you can do all that, and if a convertible, open it from some distance away. Porsche deleted this capability some time back presumably for liability reasons, but you can restore that function with the SmartTop module.

Do you have a special option on your car? Does it open the sunroof too?

Hmmm.... SmartTop. I wonder if this is a factory or an aftermarket feature. I'll do some searches in here for more info.
Thanks, Dan.

Might be a europe only thing but it wasn't a special option. And no, it doesn't open (or close) the sunroof - poor show from Porsche on this missing function I say!

I don't believe the smart key product (like the smart top but for coupe's) works the sunroof either!

SmarTop is made by Mods4cars, and is more useful on cabs since it allows remote operation of the soft top. I have it on my Targa as it does provide a few features for coupes/Targas as well. But it doesn't control the sunroof.

RemoteKey is the version for Coupes, besides key window control, it includes one touch window UP for passengers side, beep on lock & unlock. long trunk opening delay, and may other features. A very usefull option I installed over a year ago and am very happy with!

Valid point but I can tell you that our Lexus LX470 can lower/open all the windows and sunroof with the remote and it does come in handy when you're approaching a hot car. That extra few seconds of letting all the hot air escape makes a bid difference.

And for the record... there are about a zillion things that Porsche should be including in the base price of the 997 that they don't. This option would be the least of my issues. But I still love the car.

Precisely. On a hot day, pressing one button and holding it a few secs to get all windows to go down and the top/targa roof/sunroof to open is a big deal.

If the SmartTop works at opening the convertable lid, why can't it operate the targa roof or the sunroof as if it were a ragtop?

OK fair point I guess however, I will agree that the inclusion of other "freebies" includes at least 5 other things that I would rather have in front of this gizmo......

Most of the stuff included with the gizmo is std on the S with sport chrono anyhow; but I'd still like to close my windows/roof remotely .... The point being, it seems like the options were there in the past but have been deleted for the 997, which is bollox.

My Lexus GS 300 has that remote option for the windows as well. As mentioned above fantastic for letting out the hot air!
