I've noticed when I start my car & the engine is cold from sitting overnight, it gives sort of a "rattle" sound when it first starts up. I've even noticed a similar "loud "rattle" sound that only lasts for a second or two (which is really irritating) when I leave a light and may be lugging it a little, or in second gear just crawling around a corner such as I'd do in a residential neighborhood. The sound is not always there, but it does always seem to be there when the engine is cold.
I seem to recall the dealer salesperson telling me that the "S" model does that when it first starts up.
Any comments from those of you that know a lot more than I do would be appreciated.

There is a small container of metal screws and marbles left in during the assembly process. The container also has heat-activated accoustic dampners which, in a short time, expand and dampen the sounds which you describe. This irritating sound goes away in about 45 seconds. It's just the material properties of the dampners chosen by Zuffenhausen to emulate an air-cooled 911.

That's the emissions system doing something or the other with an air, gas, and/or solid to keep pollutants down until something or the other warms up to an efficient pollutant stopping temperature... or, not.

There is a feature here called the Search Function:

I have never heard this sound.
The only untoward sound I have ever heard is if you try to start the engine very quickly after shutting it down when the engine is hot (e.g., realizing you need to move back in a parking spot a little more right after shutting off the engine).
I do have sport exhaust, so maybe it is masking the sound when cold . . . since PSE is so awesomely loud when cold . . .

As others have said, its the emissions systems pushing everything to the max to get the cats up to temperature as fast as possible. A Honda engine does the same thing is you listen carefully enough.
