Default Loud weird noise at startup on 2005 911S

Maybe this has been covered before, but when I start my 911 up in the morning it makes a very loud rumbling noise from the rear of the car. The noise only lasts for approx 10-15 seconds then goes away. My porsche dealer says thay all do that, its the emissions equipment at work. Do they all make this noise?

Thanks,

Flash

You mean that growling sound the engine makes when it wakes up? Flash, that's not a loud weird noise....that's music to my ears.

Flash, my car almost sounds like it's knocking when it first starts up in the morning,...for about 10-15 seconds...I am told this is a normal characteristic on a cold start.

Yes, exactly. Its kind of like a bad bearing noise (grumble) but its coming from the exhaust. Only on a cold start and only for 10-15 seconds. Sounds like crap but I guess its the small price of admission.

That's just your twin exhaust cans clearing their throats... getting ready to sing!

I have to admit, it's not a 'nice' sound to me either but I think it's normal!

Sounds like a popping/rattling on my car.Thought there was something wrong with it when I first got it so called the Porsche dealer and they told me it was quite normal.

Wink weird Sound

Hard to believe that a 90k Porsche sounds like a $750 1978 Chevy Cavalier for 15 seconds at start-up. I guess Ill get used to it. Thats really the only thing I dont like about the car!

Took mine to the dealer because of that sound. They said "that is the normal operating sound at start-up". 100K+ car !!!!!!!

Ditto here. Mine now has about 6k miles and does it every cold start. I've accepted it and don't even notice it anymore. Until my girlfriend hears it and asks: Why does your baby sound like it's sick??

I wonder if this has to do with ambient temperature and the amount of 'choke' going on with a cold start - or whatever 'choke' is called these days.

Ellig - it's funny you say that your GF notices it,...my wife always notices it.

Overall I guess,...why not? Race cars usually sound a bit sick and knocky when they have their first start up of the day...so why not a 997? I can rationalize just about anything.

From your description I wouldn't be surprised if there is something wrong with your car if it sounds like a cheap old beater.

When mine starts up it sounds like the car has sports exhaust - my wife says the car sounds bad-*** like a race car. I wish it sounded like that all the time. Maybe that's why guys get PSE.
