Man, I'm getting closer and closer to ordering a new car. Seems everytime I find a car that hits all the right notes on color and options it's missing something or the price can't be made reasonably reasonable.

My latest find has just about everything but is missing the sport chrono option.

How critical is this in a 997S that I hope to see street and track time with?

Yeah, the timing wart. But I was thinking about the implications for driving/handling characteristics. This would not be a tip car so shift patterns are not an issue.

The bar-graph laptime function is pretty cool. That's about it. Sport chrono and the rear wiper are the only two options that I shouldn't have ordered.

I think the sport chrono is worth the investment. For the price you can't get a better enhancement to overall performance. Get it you won't be disappointed.

I wouldn't order it again. The only thing about it I like is being able to adjust some of the settings - door locks etc.

I have it. Not worth it, IMO. No real performance bump except in the Turbo.

For lap times - I would rather use a real timing device instead of having to flick the stalk at just the right time - and bragging rights on the track with Sport Chrono are definitely not going to hold up.

For the record - I like the way the Sport Chrono dial looks when activated at night.

I do love my ss Daytona though. Definitely worth it.

Silly. It's a placebo. The only thing worth having is the slightly looser PSM.

To be clear, unless you have a turbo or a tiptronic, there are no performance enhancements from the sport chrono. Pushing the sport button changes the throttle mapping, so you get more gas for less throttle input, but at wot, the amount of gas is exactly the same. You do get a more relaxed PSM setting, but I track my car a fair amount, am in the highest run group in my PCA region, and rarely have PSM intervene on the track. When it does I'm generally happy to "see' it.

As far as using SC as a lap timer, I've tried it, but most of the time I find that I forget to toggle it while I'm on the track. It's just not useful, and if you really want a lap timer, for the money you can do much much better.

It does look cool when it's lit up though.

The wart is useless - the electronics behind it/with it are cool though; just wish there was an option to turn it into a proper clock!

I went with the wart -- primarily because of the enhanced options eg: door locks, drl's. I doubt that I'll ever use it as a timer, however.

purryb - If you already found your car w/o the wart, buy it. It came with my car and I thought it was a nice option to have and use based on what some others have said that have it, but no - I don't use it at all. I don't mind the look of the wart though, I just wouldn't pay extra for it. If you track near the limit at lot of the time, yes, maybe the PSM re-calibration be may useful to you, but driving normally, no, check off a more beneficial option. The throttle remap isn't a big thing either - fun the first couple of times, but once the novelty wears off, you don't hit the switch at all. Chrono - get a watch like others have said.

For a better option, go for the short shifter, that will put a smile on your face.

I have it on mine and love it. I always have it on as I prefer the more immediate feel you get. As a timer, I rarely use it, however. When I do, it's just for ***** and giggles. I did have a very senior PCA instructor in my area tell me at an autocross event that they are "absolutely wonderful" for autocrossing. I would order it again, but don't consider it a "must have".
