Default Short Shift Or Not?

Am thinking of my next mod and although I've never had a car with it...short shift kit seems a reasonable option to consider. Any thoughts on it pros and cons? I've always had manual cars since I got my 1st car (a Nissan Sentra_ back in the 1980s so shifting is not a problem for me...its a requirement. However I am leary as to whether the short shift kit is worth the difference or if it will be too much of a change for me to deal with.

Anyway seems to courses of option out there exist. B&M short shift or OEM Porsche short shift kit. Any differences or important things to consider with each?

B&M SSK 100% order from eric at b plug .com I love it as many have said before, this should be as standard as a steering wheel.....not one compaint after 4500 miles

I ordered the SSK on my 997 from the factory and I've been very pleased with it. Two months after I got the car I added one to my Boxster as well. A very worthwhile upgrade, imho.

Here's the alternative viewpoint...

Don't bother. The oem shifter is 30% shorter than the 996 by design and works like a quality swiss watch. The aftermarket and oem SSK doesn't really give you anything other than rougher shifting, especially in cold climates. It's not going to make you any faster, just take money out of your pocket

Love my OEM SS.

Quick anecdote; had my brakes flushed at P-Dealer this past weekend in prep for DE next weekend (lots of air in lines, btw). Tech finished the job and drove the car back to waiting area. First thing he said was, "does this have the short shifter...it feels so much better than the regular 997 shifter..." My sentiment exactly.

I test drove a 997 S coupe back in January with a short shifter (which I assume was OEM) and on a cold day it was definitely more effort than what I feel in my current 997. Also the sales person at the time told me that "it was a waste of money" and "particularly bad in cold weather".

I'm very happy with the 997 shifter as is - especially compared to my previous M5 (it's a significantly shorter throw). But to be fair, I haven't spent a ton of time with either of the short shift alternatives.

I have both (normal and SS). The SS is definitely very notchy when cold. But once warmed up, it's pretty nice. I like it a lot.

My B&M SSK must be defective then since it's like a hot knife through butter and 30% shorter than 997 stock. Eric.......are you listening?

All I have to do to appreciate the plain old OEM shifter on my 997 is drive my SC. And its a pretty nice shifting 915.

I like the way Ron approaches topics. I agree with him but only partially. I have the factory SSK and yes it makes shifting in the cold a bit of challenge but once it warms up it is glorious. By the same token the stock set up is great and neither is really going to make you much faster. So if you want to spend the money for the fun of it, which we are all guilty of, go ahead you will enjoy it but certainly not neccessary.

yes and for $199, other than clear markers, it's the best bang for the buck Mod
