I've seen a front end collision with a plate sitting on the dash. That plate cut open the passenger's eye and landed at the back seat... It made me feel uneasy whenever I see a car on the street driving with a plate on the dash....

It wouldn't be the first trauma that I've cared for that ended up with a plate in the person's head!!!

The policy as I have been told (by a PCA member who happens to be a CHP Chippie) is not to pull someone over for no front plate (in California) but once they have you to the side for something else they can always start to dig around for infractions!

Am ordering bumperplugs myself and my PCA club front plate goes on my garage wall! We'll see how the police do as far as harassment for the non plate goes. I am sure they have plenty of other stuff to do.

You will eventually get a ticket. That's just the reality.

It's been a while since I got my 997, and I've been putting off installing license plates.

What do you mean by a dealer plate? Are you talking about the black plastic bracket or the dealer logo plate??

I believe Dan means the plate they put on the dashboard when you test-drive an unregistered car.

In the two 997's I've test driven (and bought) they put the dealer plate on the floor.

Why doesn't some enterprising person come up with a product that puts the plate image on some sort of sticky plastic film that we could stick on the front of our car? All they'd need is a .jpg of the plate, they could make the stick on and mail it to us. I think I've seen something like that in Europe, don't know if it's available here.

I register my cars in a no-front-plate jurisdiction (almost reason enough to move), but back-in-the-day I would explain to the offended officer that my car had been in a minor accident and the front plate mount had since been on backorder from Porsche.

That story always seemed to work....

There's someone, somewhere that makes electric front plate mounts that retract/extend with the push of a button. I saw them on an auto-forum like this somewhere a couple of years ago.

Cop pulls you over, get that plate out there before he walks up to the car. Blow his/her mind.

Google search would probably track it down...

So they really produce that, not just for 007 movies? Back in the days in Germany, I dreamed about such a button to switch license plates in preparation for possible speed trap cameras...

Yeah, it was $150 or so, it worked like a DVD/CD drive - plate would slide forward from grille and then flip down (or up I suppose) and could be retracted in the same manner.

Not sure how it would work on the front of a 997, but I suppose you could mount it low, under the front valence and have the plate flip up when deployed.

Sounds like a money-making opportunity just waiting to be taken advantage of...
