Default Placing license plate on dashboard

Anyone live with placing his license plate on top of the dashboard? Are they visible enough not to be pulled over by cops? For those who do this, how do you prevent it from moving around in turns?

Except for the Euro plates, our round front-end P cars are much better without front license plates.

I don't have a mounted front plate, but nor do I put it n the dash when driving. I do, however, place it on the dash when parked and thus far I've managed to get away with it. Having said that, I haven't been pulled over by the cops for any other infringement, in which case I have no doubt that they would throw that into the pot for good measure.

Whenever I see someone driving with a license on the dash, all I can think of is: how do you prevent that thin metal plate from going through your passenger's head in an accident?!

Ah OK, so what happens when you take a turn quickly? Plate slide? Maybe hit you or someone else in the car? Great for leather dash too.

Leave it in you garage, house or whatever and deal with the penalty if stopped, or get a plate holder for the front bumper.

I bought my car from a state that does not require front plates. I live in VA which does require front plates. The dealership gave me the front bracket, but the car looks so much better without the front plate. So, I keep the front plate and the bracket in the trunk and I hope I don't get stopped.

I've had two 997's - both had have their front plates in the trunk. I've driven in Idaho, Montana, WA, Oregon, Utah, Kalifornia and Canada with these cars and not had a problem - yet. I was told by a state patrolman here in Idaho they like to shoot the laser radar off the front plate - if you don't have one and you are not zooming along they generally won't bother you. But keep this in mind, this is a state where more than a few people make their own license plates, I've been told they don't believe the state has the right to sell you a plate and require you to display it so they make their own. Some are pretty creative, all of them I've seen are made from wood - usually plywood.

Try one of these .
It consists of an aluminum bolt which threads into the front tow hook inlet
and a heavy duty bracket to which the plate is attached.
It installs in a few minutes , no drilling and nothing touches the bumper.

It fits all alter model 911 and Boxter/Cayman models.

It sells for $ 35 ( including shipping in US and Canada)

If interested, you can contact me here or e-mail at :

I've got one of these from Rolf - it's very nicely made. I haven't gotten around to installing it. I figure I'll wait until I get stopped for no front plate.

Perhaps you can talk your dealer out of a dealer plate to leave on your dashboard. That's the only plate you should ever consider having inside the car.

Default Front Plate

I have had my S-4 Cab for 4 years without one in NJ (which requires a front plate) I have never been stopped for not having a front plate (although I did receive some written warnings for exceeding the speed limit slightly). I get my C2s next week and will not put on a front plate until I am forced to do so.

I think having it on the dash will call more attention to it. I don't have a front plate on mine and have been stopped once (at a toll plaza) but he did not ticket me. I do keep it under the seat and told him I had recently had some work done on the front end and the dealer did not have the bracket but ordered it.

The other day there was a group of cops stopping each car (looking at inspection/reg. stickers I imagine) and they waved me right through.

I do not remember where mine is. Have not had a front plate for 6 years on two different cars.
