Admittedly, I don't have personal experience.

ALL manual transmissions are a little stiff in cold weather, until the oil warms up.

I installed the OEM sport shifter myself and it's smooth as silk.

The 911 has one of the best transmissions available in the world today.
If someone has a "notchy" shifter , they should get their cables properly adjusted.

Well, technically, yes, but I think we all understand that it is a matter of degree (no pun intended).

The question remains regarding the "relative" stiffness at a given temperature.

I think those of us looking to order this option or add it later would benefit from a specific discussion as to what temperatures low gear movements become more difficult (admittedly a subjective threshold).

If you want a car that you can get in, start, and immediately begin driving the car at it's performance limits, without any warm-up of the car, at all, what-so-ever...... then, yes, I'd suggest a standard shift. More leverage. ( (The ignition switch is on the left side for this very reason also).

Short of that, the SSK is not going to be the "limiting factor" in how you drive this car, regardless of temperatue....

Anything short of that requirement for the use of this car, SSK is the way to go. That's my impression of, and exprience with, the SSK anyhow. :-)

Thanks for your edit and input.

Let's try this again with numbers. I will be driving my car at 10 oF. If you have driven your car at that temperature, what kind of effects can I expect with a SSK relative to a stock shift kit?

(and, by the way, I'm NOT looking for performance before proper warmup, but I don't want to fight to get the car in gear during 4 months out of the year.)

I got the SSK on my '07 Carrera S and love it. After driving with it for a couple of weeks I had to add it to my '05 Boxster S as well. I'm (obviously) very pleased with it.

All Club Coupes come with the Sport Shifter - yea when not warmed up it can be notchy - but it is great - trust me - even when I drove cross country and got stuck in Okalhoma City traffic in the morning when heading out of town it wasn't that bad...

Well worth the option - especially when one is "Stroking Through The Gears"!!!!

Yea - good point about the Boxster a few posts back - I know it's a completely different animal - but my Wife's Boxster shifter is SOOOOO sloppy when compared to the 997S with the Sport Shifter....

Suncoast sells one that is smoother than the factory option. It is less notchy when cold.

Hey in the air. At 10 degrees, you will be doing some starting in second gear until the car warms up, believe me. It takes some getting used to. It can get embarassing when your at a light and it turns green and you can't get the dam thing into 1st gear. But once it's warm, its butter.

I added my OEM short shifter a few months after getting the car; very happy with the shorter throw. It may be a little notchy when cold - but really not an issue at all, not "harder" to drive.

I had the SSK in 997 C4S - very "notchy" going into 1st gear when cold otherwise it was great.

I have the SSK in a 997 TT - much less "notchy" going into 1st gear than the C4S when cold - don't know if the reason is because TT has a different transmission or if the install was better.

The SSK was a great change in both cars.

Thanks for the explanation and detail, SD.
