Default Question on Battery Maintainer

Stupid question on the Porsche battery maintainer. I know it plugs into the cigarette lighter, but does it also have to plug into an electrical outlet? If so, what do you have to do crack window?

You do need to plug it into an external AC source. At least on the 996 (assume 997 as well) there is an indent (2 in fact) on the lower rubber driver's door seal so you can comfortably fit the power cord in without damaging the seal (or paint). Run your fingers down the length of the seal and you'll find them. The Porsche designers knew that some of us wouldn't be driving our cars too much and would have them on trickle chargers at times.

Phil, you beat me to it. I noticed the cutouts in the rubber door gasket the first time I detailed the car. I fugured that's why ther were there. The winters are mild here in NC and I drive my car almost every day so I have never needed used a trickle charger.

Find the rubber seal at the bottom of the door, and run your fingers over it - you should feel at least 1 and maybe 2 notches/indents on the surface of the seal which specifically fits the cord.

I use the "Battery Tender" brand ( I figure that they have more experience than Porsche in this space) and connect directly to the battery via the permanent battery post connections. I simply lower (but don't latch) the hood. This allows me to see the LED displays at a glance when walking by the car.

Plus the Battery Tender is much less expensive (that Porsche emblem nearly triples the price).

I bought the Black & Decker battery tender from Amazon.com last year .
(the small orange colored unit )

It has (2) power settings , auto. on/off ( just like the Porsche brand )
and has worked great for over a year now
(I use the 1 Amp setting )

It cost under $30, shipped to your house

I also use a Battery Tender, permanently mounted to the battery. I run the cord out the back of the hood, which lets me latch the hood.

Actually, I latch the hood with the cord out the front on the 993 and the Carrera before it as well, have for years, with no problems whatsoever.

The 993 battery is now 6 years old and is perfect. Highly recommend a maintainer unless you drive your car daily.
