Default To Short Shift or Not To Short Shift?

Hello all.New member and 2008 911S owner as of today.Happy man on both counts. Any disadvantages to having a Porsche short shifter installed at the dealer? I feel the throws are a bit long on the factory shifter although I've been told thay were improved. Had a S.shifter on my last ride (Supra) and did enjoy it.Thanks for any comments.

Sometimes when the car is cold, it can be difficult to get into first gear, otherwise to problems.

Do it. You'll love it.

The only disadvantage I see is that it continues to reward Porsche for making it an option and not standard equipment!
As Mike said, it is a little bit stiffer getting into 1st gear when it's cold out.

Just installed the SSK. I love it. Get it!!!

I had my local dealer install it cause I didn't want to give them any reason to charge me some big $$$ down the line just because they didn't do the install. Labor was not much. Think of it as insurance $$$ in case you need an adjustment later on.

Love the short shifter. It is definitaley harder to shift into 1st when cold though.

To each his own but I’m glad it’s still an option. I have never been a fan of short shift linkages due to the trade-off of leverage to shorten the motion of your hand.

With the shortened movement of your hand you have to apply more force to select gears, particularly when cold, it will usually be harder on the synchros and guide sleeves, with the short shift kit your hand motion better be more precise or you will grab the wrong gear and your gearbox still won’t shift any faster.

I selected a number of factory options when I ordered my C2S (close to $46,000 worth) but the short shift kit was never even a consideration.

As you said.......to each his own but I have to disagree with most of that based on 6,000 miles with a short shift kit. Granted, I'm in Florida so any cold temperature issues don't apply but other than that, I think the short kit improves the feel of the shifter......period. More force? Not hardly. I can shift into any gear using two fingertips including first as long as I'm 15 mph or below. "Grab the wrong gear'? Not once and not even close. The 997 6- speed is probably the best manual transmission I ever laid my right hand on and the short kit only makes it better imo.

I have also noticed that shifting to 4th when cold you get a grind. Does anyone else get that or is it just my tranny?

Go drive a 5 sp truck for a while then get back in your Porsche and you'll think you have a short shifter! The throws are already short...don't see the point.
