Your car already came with a short shift as standard - that is it's about 30% shorter than the shifter in the 996. I drove both versions of the C2S before ordering and felt the shorter shifter wasn't any better, so did not order it with the car. Then when the car arrived, I did the same - tried both. No desire for the option, but still kept my mind open through a track season. After about 25 hours of track use, I can say I still have no desire for anything other than the oem shifter.

Disadvantages to the option? Cost, harder to get into 1st, notchy shifting, especially when cold.

No hurry - they can put it in any time. Enjoy the car through break in and then decide. I think you'll find there's no real advantage...

I absolutely love my short shifter (B&M) and feel it is clearly an improvement in feel. Just MHO......

The short shifter upgrade was the best money I have ever spent. I can't express this enough. I went with OEM. I laughed the whole way home from the dealer. It really connects the driver further with the vehicle. Try it and you will agree. I am not concerned about the first 60 seconds of engine warm up... every sports car I have ever owned was stubborn with first gear when cold especially when the car is still moving.

I had the short shift on my previous 05 C2S and did not like it.

Also, they do cause synchronizer ring wear. This info was contained in a Porsche memo that got leaked on the web.

Brand new 2008 911S; nearly a $100K car (as all Porsches are).....I thought the factory shifting was somewhat disappointing. You could have a cup of coffee for the time it takes to go from 4th to 5th; kind of a long throw. With that said I still love the car to death.Installed a short shifter and now the car feels as I hoped it would be.Real sports car feel.Don't understand why they do not design a better stock shifter.

I have it and like my short shift kit from Porsche factory.

As others said, cold temps make it difficult to get into 1st, but as it warms up (transmission) it gets better than ever. The rest is like "butta".

I can shift into any gear using two fingertips including first as long as I'm 15 mph or below. "Grab the wrong gear'? Not once and not even close. The 997 6- speed is probably the best manual transmission I ever laid my right hand on and the short kit only makes it better imo.

There are a zillion posts on this issue. I don't recall seeing any negative ones on it. I have an OEM SSK with Evo ShiftLink. The shift feel is completely different from stock - very direct, precise, and bolt-like. No comparison - great mod.

Tinluver. congrats on the new SS. If you think its necessary then that's all that really matters. As I said before its all realitve to what your mindset is. I had two Boxsters before the 07 911 and the 911 shifter has much shorter throws than both of them. There is always some new/better gimmick out there for people to spend their money on.

I had the dealer do mine and it works well although someone else noticed it can be a bit stiff into gear 1. Since my car is new, I thought the dealer install was the way to go.

Thanks Jim, no doubt I am spoiled, never thought I would have the Porsche to begin with.Been driving Supras for 20 years! Have an 89 now with a short shifter, and that is like a truck compared to the stock Porsche.Spoiled rotten
