Please define? Why does the 3.6 have a better power delivery. I test drove the 3.8 and was enthralled at the power and torque of the motor (low and mid-range). Seemed like it would be up my alley with all the autocrossing that I do.
I'm curious. Up until this thread, I have only been looking for 911S cars and not the standard.
Thanks in advance,
Pete

The interesting comment in Excellence is in the article on the F77 997. "(B)est 997s (note - not 997S) we've driven on the Loop...bum-basic 997, evo's supercharged 997, and the new GT3."
Since they say "bum-basic" they must me no PASM and 18s.
They also, again as in the April 07 issue, note the power delivery of the 3.6 vs. the 3.8. They go on to recount their experience from Feb 07 issue when they drove a 997S and 997S w/X51 back to back and note they couldn't feel the extra 26HP (although side by side the X51 pulled away bit by bit).
This too has been my experience, not missing the power difference between the 3.6 & 3.8.

4-07 Excellence on the C2 cab 997 "noticeably keener through the revs than the .. 997S. To get a 997S that revs as cleanly as the base 997 does, you have to order ... X51" Article goes on to point out the better steering and chassis response of the 997 vs the 997S.
5-07 Excellence on the F77 - points to the GT3 997 and the "bum-basic" 997 as their favorites on the Loop (I'm excluding non-factory models they mention).
"[i]f you appreciate the way a flat six winds out as much as what it puts out, then the base Carrera is worth careful consideration."

I have the C2S and switched to 18"s and am very happy with the switch. Are there any suspension differences between the 997 and 997S other than the tires?
All I have to do now is get the X51 kit installed and I'll have the perfect car

Additionally, the 3.8 engine provides better low-end torque, which makes it better in city driving. The C2 is a great car, but I prefer my C2S to my previous C2.

After having both I prefer the base car. I don't notice the small power diff and the 3.6 is smoother. The 3.8 almost has a forced induction quality to it I just didn't like - I realize this is a bit of an exaggeration but I don't know how else to explain the surges of power in the 3.8 compared to the even power delivery of the 3.6.
I greatly prefer the 18s and lack of PASM. I suppose 90% of that has to do w/ 18s vs 19s but I never used the sport setting and considered PASM just something else that might break. I find the base suspension set-up more confidence inspiring.
Overall the driving experience of the base car is better and I have an additional $8K in my bank acct.
Note - I don't track the car and don't street race.
Also, one last reference you can watch on the subject is on Coochas website, the Best Motoring video, #3 on his list under 997 c2/c2s variant section:

I have to say that my C2 was a damn fine car. It certainly wasn't lower class as we see in the way they structure other brands. I often wondered how you could make a car like this better. Something that could breeze through a 120mph with no effort at all and inspired so much confidence in hard cornering.
I have a 500 mile stretch of fairly isolated roads to get my new C4S home. I can hardly wait to see what the difference is.
