Default Engine Failure @ 17,000 Miles

Have an 05 997S with 17500 miles. Started having cold start problems (misfire, rough idle, CLE), then coolant loss. Took to local Porche service and was told it was the aftermarket cats causing the misfire. Two days later, low coolant light went on. Coolant in the oil. Trailered the car to another Porsche dealer, who in less than 30min. diagnosed a major engine failure (oil contamination by coolant, and significant amount of metal particles in the oil filter).
No explanation of nature of the problem, say they will box, and ship the motor to Porsche, and will never hear back what the problem was. The upside is I get a new engine. Anybody have any similar experience similar to this, just curious.
Just a shout out to Foreign Cars in Greensboro, NC. for their handling of the problem. They gave me a loaner while my car is in the shop with no hesitation, and were most sympathetic and conserned as to my plight. Unfortunatlely, the same cannot be said for my local dealer who said they could not troubleshoot the problem with the car because it had aftermarket cats on the car. Now I need a new motor, thankfully under warranty.

Ouch, sorry to hear Dave. I would definitely try and find why you had the engine failure just for peace of mind.

Good luck with the new engine!

Yea, those aftermarket cats (domestic shorthairs?) will do that!

Sorry to hear of the failure. Please post the name of that local dealer so any local Rennlisters can choose to stay the hell away from them... Love to hear their technical explanation as to how aftermarket cats can cause coolant to seep into the oil... Idiots.....

guys you have to understand the dealers are doing what they are being told, sure some people that work there may think they are higher then us mere mortals, but if they spill the beans on whats going on at porsche they can be fired. how do i know this? i am a porsche specialist working for my father in sydney australia, my father worked for porsche for over 18 years so he has many friends at porsche australia and even a few in germany. anyway we were speaking to a good friend working for a porsche dealership in sydney to which he was telling us about an unofficial memo in the company, basically said... shut up, deny fault, replace if under warranty. if not under warranty customer buys new engine. at which point they are highly discounted anyway.

Nice.

JET, I think you're lucky that they didn't pull some BS on you about the aftermarket cats and the engine change. Sounds like a smart dealer who thinks more about future business oportunities and ethics rather than the 'not my problem' approach. I can't believe the first dealer couldn't diagnose the problem - I mean coolant in the oil !!!!! I think that was on "Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader."

Oh, and while we're talking about cats....I just had to share this scan from a recent Fresh Step ad campaign:

I'm having a hard time understanding where the problem with this is?

Davearm,

Sorry to hear the bad news, but it looks like in just a few weeks you'll get a "heart transplant" and be on your way. Don't forget to break it in right. Might be a good time to think X51.

More distrubing to me is the bail out your local dealer did on you. Sounds like they are trained to deny if they see anything that is non-Porsche on your car. Kudos to F/C for doing the right thing. If my C2S has the slightest hiccup, to be on the safe side you can bet I'll strip the Bosch Windshield Wipers off the car before bringing it to the dealer! I won't give them anything to point to.

Dave,
As you may not want to mention the name of the first dealer on this Forum, I have sent you a private message requesting who it is, as I also live in Raleigh and have a 2006 C4S Cab. Thanks, and good luck.

Personally I think we ought to institute a "HALL of SHAME" for dealers who DNGAF after they make the sale!

Sorry to hear of the engine failure. You said you were getting a "new" engine. Are you sure it is "new", or is it a remanufactured engine?

Sorry to hear that...maybe I'll think twice about an aftermarket exhaust on my car. Okay thought about it and its still a go! Hopefully no bad juju will happen and my dealer so far has been very good. Hope you're up and running soon.
