Default K40 vs. Valentine 1

I am considering getting a radar detector (the K40 or V1) and would like people's opinions and feedback. I've searched the archives and read previous posts, but I still would like up to date input.

My criteria for a detector is as follows in priority:

1. Must be as stealth or integrated to the interior as much as possible. K40 seems to have the edge here.
2. Must provide as much protection as possible. V1 seems to have the edge here.

Also, what do people do when the top is down and you need to park? Do you put the radar detector away in the glove box so it doesn't gert stolen?

I value the input here and look for people's feedback.

Thanks, Mike

I was going to buy the V1 until I read the cop forum link that was posted here recently. If the K40 was listed as part of the option ($2400 is the quote I got recently) when I ordered my car, I probably would have ordered it. But now, I just hate to send my car to the shop. So, I have been driving my car around 75 most of the time

I have a V1 in my daily driver, and it works great. The negative is that it is visible, and the wires are ugly. My 997 has K40, and it works just fine. I highly recommend it.

When I had a cab, I put the top up when I parked. It won't stop a professional but it would help. Also keep things out of sight.

I did a fairly extensive installation of the Valentine. It's as well hidden as it can be, considering the design. The K40s are more Stealthy.

I generally remove it when parking in certain places.

I have the K40 and it's great...no tickets...YET.
V1 has strong supporters as well but I could not bring myself to hang the 1975 looking ornament inside my $140K machine.

Cost me $1900 and change dealer installed.

I agree, it may be a great unit, but why haven't they developed one like a K-40? I'd bet you'd be seeing many more people switching to the newer type!

I like my K-40. One thing I wish they would do is have the avalibility of updating the firmware on it for any changes to radar/laser.

Deanski

They mount it inside the left front air intake, below the left headlight. Sorry I dont' have any pics. My car is having service done at this time. Trust me it's very unobstrusive. Not visible at all.

Hope this helps.

Don't mean to confuse the issue but you should probably also look at the Passport SRX. It, too, is a stealth install. It cost me around $1700 installed.

Those guys on that forum get a little ahead of themselves when talking about radar detectors. I've never had a situation where some cop says "Aha, a radar detector" and throws the book at you.
