Default Dual Clutch for 2008

I just read that the 2008 models will have a dual clutch. Are they like the setup Ferrari has where the engine is actually disabled during the shift and the clutch is not used after you get the car rolling?

I believe the "dual clutch" that's often mentioned for Porsche's future is similar (if not identical) to the current Audi DSG transmission. Twin clutches make shifts very quickly, smooth, and almost seamless. My A3 has the DSG and it's actually much better than the Tiptronic on my wife's Boxster.

I read a lot of good comments on the DSG. It seems much better than the BMW SMG. This will start a whole new debate about the "pure" feel of a 6-speed vs. DSG. It would have to be a huge improvement over the 6-speed for me to change. Another issue is that this would allow my wife to drive my car (not good). Anyone know what Porsche racing is using?

997 cup cars have a six-speed sequential dog-type gearbox
RS Spyder is using a concept six-speed sequential Electro-pneumatic system operated by switches on steering wheel

I've driven SMG in an M3, and M6 and it sucks. I would consider trying DSG but it woul dhave to be a huge improvement for me to switch from a 6spd.

I've driven the F430 with the F1 trans and it was great. If DSG is a good as that I would consider the switch.

But as Alstoy said, then my wife would be able to drive my cars and that wouldn't be good.

Get ready to let your wife drive the car, DSG is that good. I predict within the next 5 years people will be writting about why Porsche still sells manuals when the DSG cars are so much faster and easier to operate in traffic and on the race course.IMHO

Still speculative- we didn't hear a thing about it during the full press cayenne launch in mexico.

DSG - one of the most important advances since the starter motor. I heard that Porsche was involved in the development of the Audi DSG box some years ago and 2007 was to be the year. The concern was whether the box could cope with high end performance. Not even Audi uses the DSG box on its V8s. If Porsche cracks that issue then stick shift will be redundant. The speed of the gear changes is incredible.

Still won't replace the fun of 'rowing through the gears' if you ask me..

...that's half the fun!

Actually you can still row through the gears. You just won't have a clutch pedal to engage before shifting.

I like that part too! < thats like drinking a beer from a tube; it's still going through your mouth to your stomach, and sure it'll get you drunk faster...

but holding that nice cold pint and 'lifting' it to your lips is just HEAVEN!

I like the idea of the DSG but I wouldn't order it the first year it comes out. Most car makers' first attempt fall short.

I expect the dual clutch system to be here in 08 as a MY09. No official info, just my guess. Porsche developed their first PDK system in '89 for the 962 racer.
