Can Barely Sleep: Taking first 997 Roadtrip!

Please post a full report when you get back. The wife and I plan to do the drive in early March. We plan on visiting her aunt in the L.A. area then heading up the coast to San Francisco and the Napa-Sonoma areas. If anybody has any suggestions for us we would appreciate them.

In 2003 I rode the PCH on a Harley from San Fran to the Oregon border. If you like the southern drive, try the northern one. All I can say is WOW. After I came back I rode from San Fran down to Big Sur and back. Although gorgeous, I actually liked the northern part better because of the redwoods.

Chris: My wife & I did it a few years ago in a Hertz sh_t box. Going from LA to Bodega Bay. Our only comment - aside from this kind of beauty*
.....was: It wudda looked better going N-to-S. As we'd have been on the oceanside with the best views the whole time. However, coming from the Maryland bush, that was some incredible road! Out here, we have to pretty much go to Cape Breton Is. or NFLD for similar views. Have fun!

Here's a picture of Julia Pfeiffer State Park that I took a couple years ago. Watch for the signs and look for it on the ocean side of Rt 1. It's one of the nicer spots along Rt 1 south of San Francisco. Personally, I find Rt north of SF nicer.

Beautiful pic of the waterfall. You do realize don't you, that at this very moment they're having a cocktail watching the sun set over the Pacific from a deck at Ventana..... http://www.ventanainn.com/resort.asp

Hey, ChrisF ....
No, I've never done this trip in a Porsche. Wish I could have. We did make the trip a couple times in the late '70s and early '80s in a Ford Fiesta.
Go figure, eh.
A Ford Fiesta. And my wife (at the time...) was mostly asleep. She's still asleep.
Driving Hiway 1 in a P-car would be terrific. Just have the traffic get outa the way and cruise .....

Done Route 1 many times in a Porsche 911 turbo...the only way to tackle that route especially in the summer when RV after RV stack up and don't use turnouts. A great overnight spot is the Timber Cove Lodge near Jenner,--north of Bodega Bay. (Watch out for errant birds!)

I was up in Redwood City in early November, part of it on Rte 1, part of it on 101. For me, any trip north of Santa Barbara is magic. I especially like going to San Luis Obispo on Thursday nights for the street fair.
The 997 is a real treat to take on road trips

I did the entire LA- SF via PCH run last summer. If I knew how to post a link to my trip I would do it here. Anyway, I went on a weekday when the traffic was light and the roads were dry . One of the most memorable drives I have taken. Looking forward to doing it again.

I was staying at The Lodge at Pebble Beach in '99 with a college buddy and we took the ride down to Big Sur in a rental convertible Mustang. Man, that was a gas. I drove and remember being a little scared at times.
There was a restaurant/hotel called the Pacific Highlands where we ate on the way back. Did we ever luck into it with that choice! Watched the sun go down through the big picture window from their wonderful dining room. Food was great also. A very romantic place. As usual, I was with the wrong partner - I've often thought that I've got to get back there with my wife.
Somewhere on the way South we drove down some mountainside road to a biker bar and had a great time there too. You guys on the West Coast sure are lucky.

Actually sitting on the deck right now looking over the ocean, cup of coffee in hand. So much to report and great pictures to show. Will post a separate full trip report when we get back on Friday.

Chris, don't hold us in suspense until Friday. Those of us in the Northeast are going to be hit with a 4-6 inch storm here Wednesday. It could be more depending on how the wind blows. Send a few pictures tomorrow if you have a lap top. Who knows when we'll get a chance to take our P-cars out again. Enjoy!!
Take care and think of us.
