Default Is 315/25/19 too big for rear?

Hi everyone,

I'm running Michelin PS2 stock tires (235 front and 295 rear) right now in my 997S. Just bought a set of 19" Black Techart formula (8.5" front and 11" rear). I'm entertaining the thoughts of trying something other than PS2, and something less expensive. I've narrowed down to 2 choices:

1. Bridgestone RE050A at 235/35/19 and 305/30/19 at US $1026 per set, or

2. Toyo Proxes T1R at 235/35/19 and 315/25/19 (as not available in 295 or 305) at US $890 per set

Any inputs on pluses or minuses in going 305 or 315 is welcome. THANKS.

A 315 tire at a minimum should probably have a 11.5"+ wide wheel to support the sidewall correctly. Also, if you do run that big of a rear tire you will want to go bigger on the front to keep balance with the car.

Thanks Dave.

I've checked already. 315 fit into 11 to 12" wheels no problem. Going to 245 in the front is a good thought. But my question is whether it is bad to go against Porsche's recommendation of 235 Front and 295 Rear. Thanks.

Tim the 315 will fit a 11" wide rim, it just won't be optimal. Max for a 11" wide wheels should really be no more than 305's to support the sidewall properly. Will a 315 fit yes, but it just won't be optimal..

BTW..did you see these Nitto Invo's pretty good tire I hear..

Regarding the larger sizes, just see what GrandAM cars are running. They run a 265 in the front..

I have the Michiens 235/295. I need to replace the backs and am considering replacing all four with the Bridgestones. For the price they seem to be great. I've read a lot of good things about the Bridgestones, but can't find them ( Bridgestone RE050A at 235/35/19 and 295/30/19) with Pole Position. I am not sure if the Toyos are Porsche recommended like the Bridgestones, and rated "Y" for 186mph.

The Bridgestones have a nice stiff sidewall and are a great tire for the money...they just weight a ton. The PS2's really offer the best of both worlds..you get a decent stiff sidewall along with relatively light weight.

Dave-thanks. I just ordered the PS2s (305 for the backs). I've been using 295s on the back. Don't know if it will make that big a difference, but we shall see.

Hey Dave,

my topic is "too big for rear", not too big for top!

Guys - I saw the Nitto Invos in a car mag last week (Autoweek?) - they were shown on a 997 that looked pretty hot in the ad...

Are the Nittos "N" rated?

Dave,

I'm running 235/35/19 and 315/25/19 on 19"S Rims - Toyo T1R

Fit is excellent - tire wall support is not an issue on the 11" rear wheel.

235 is optimal for the front, 245 is too wide and will give you issues with turn in and cornering feedback unless you're going to start running race car camber etc on your road vehicle.

If you want to run race set-up on the road then you're left dealing with the un-even wear it will generate, and a less than happy car cornering at slower speeds.

Visually the 235 and 315 look very well balanced, and when driving the result is well balanced and a nice firm ride.

Quick Reply: Is 315/25/19 too big for rear?
