Hide or display your radar detector?
Is it illegal to display a radar detector in your vehicle, if so, what states?
Mine is visible (V-1 is right smack in the middle of my front windshield) am I doing something illegal in the state of Florida?

As far as radar detection, anything goes in Florida. You could have your detector, jammer, and scanner all mounted on the dash along with spinning antennae on the roof. Other states are stricter.

Only potential issue is inviting a "smash & grab" of your V1 if you don't remove it when parking.
Damage to your car could be more than the cost of the V1.

Normally, if the P-car is out of site I'll remove the V-1 and take it with me or place inside the glove box. Thanks for pointing out that I am legal in Florida!

How about California? Also, does anyone feel very strongly about a brand? Lastly, if you want to mount it, but keep it hidden, any recommendations for where? Does anyone have a vendor in the Bay Area they'd recommend for purchase/installation?

Even if its legal, do you really want it in plain view of the police officer when he is behind or beside you and deciding if you were going fast enough over the limit to cite you?
I have a 993 not a 997 but mine stays way up above the rearview mirror with a concealed power chord and its not so obvious. I've heard the tint at the top of the windshield may affect sensitivity but it hasn't been a problem yet, and I think they probably work a little better higher up off the dash. I always tuck it away when parked.

I think that in California it is illegal to have anything on your windshield, and as far as I know, detectors are legal, but you would have to have it on the dash.

I like the built-in look of the Calibre(K40). No ugly wires or suction cups. The indicators are LED's alongside the tach & a hidden speaker. Remote control fits in the ashtray. Radar receivers are under the bumpers. The only visible parts are the laser diffusers on top of the license plate frames. The car is a cabrio and I can park it with the top down without hacking around. Very convenient.

I think if a law inforcement person wants to get very specific even in states where dectectors are legal, he can write you up for site obstruction. A business associate who has a friend who is an officer once walked around my parked car and stated I had a few violations. Even stated the code numbers. One was license plate frame that was slightly blocking one letter, the hardwired V1 on windshield near rear view mirror, PCA and military decal on side vent windows, no front plate, and something else. I laughed at him. Bottom line, I would take down the V1 and suction cups if getting stopped. You just don't want more attention when questioned.
