In light of this, I think it is somewhat unfair to take Pcar's own post and attribute it to what "the 993 guys think of 997s". I for one am strongly considering the purchase of a 997 in the next year or two (perhaps the 997.5 variant). It's unnecessary to apply the opinions of a few 993 owners to the whole lot.

Why stir the pot?

My views on the newer cars are well known. But just because I don't like them, that doesn't mean I speak for the whole 993 forum. This is another example of texas911 trying to start arguments. I can't believe this guy is a college professor.... actually, scratch that, I CAN believe he's a college professor.

I have both and enjoy both- 993 for the track and 997 for the street - at least my two cars can get along - give it a try.

Hey pcar, nice try to save face by being ULTRA nice to others. Trying to sway opinion in your favor by playing the role of victim. You made your bed. What's funny is, you compliment someone on their choice of wheels on their 997, but you'll run back to the 993 board and degrade anyone who buys a new Porsche. Don't fall for his tactics gentlemen of the 997 board.

And again, what's with all the personal attacks? Oh, that's right, feeble minds do that, when they've lost an argument.

I hope I don't get fragged by posting this (being a newbie and all)...

I'm a poseur because I've just ordered a 997? I don't get it

Truth is that it's been a dream of mine to someday own a Porsche 911 since I was a kid. I've read countless articles about them, seen countless pictures of them and stared at them MANY times at the dealerships afterhours over the past years. The reason I'm getting the car is because:
1) I love the way it drives/handles/sounds (it doesn't look too bad either )
2) Awesome history/heritage. Excellent racing history.
3) Carreras from 30 years ago still look VERY nice. In fact, they all look pretty good to me. Some look nicer than others, but I think this is a personal thing. IMHO, the basic shape is timeless. Look at Patek Phillipe watches; the old ones are gorgeous, the new ones are also gorgeous. They're also timeless.
4) I'm at a financial point in my life where I feel comfortable buying one and don't feel I'm being irresponsible.

Discussing the merits of the different models over the years should be expected and desired. Afterall, what fun would it be if everyone thought all the models were 100% perfect and the same?? But labeling the people that buy a particular model with derogatory/insulting names isn't my cup of tea.

I would never thing someone who goes out and buys a 993 is a poseur, I certainly hope nobody thinks I am by buying a 997.

Everyone enjoy your 993's and 997's and all the other models as well!

And only strong minded, mature university professors continue trying to fan the flames of an argument. Hmm, I wonder how much respect your students would have for you if they saw your behavior on this forum?

Come to think of it, where do you find the time to post on Rennlist? Between your global warming rallies, conservative bashing, and school-sponsored Karl Marx memorial poetry readings... I don't know how you fit it all in.

(Just a little socialist humor there, to lighten things up )

Referring to a watch as being timeless sounds like a back handed compliment to me......

My IWC Porsche Design watch is better than Patek Phillipe and all of your watches.
My 997S is better than your 997s.
My 997S is better than your 993s.
My 993 was better than your 993s.
My 997S is better than your 996s.
My 993 was better than your 996s.
My RS America was better than your 964s.
My 356 is cool.

You are all losers. I am the king.

That should keep this thread going!

jcnesq: I don't have a Patek...yet, but since you mentioned IWC...I do have a IWC UTC (classic dial, not the new spitfire version) and it's WAY better than your Porsche design/IWC watch!

I must say if I had a choice to pick again and money is not part of the decision making I would still pick a 997.
993 has a raw go-kart feeling which is very fun to drive. But the 997 is the state of the art.
it's much faster, shifts better, handles better and has all the technical tools and gadgets needed in the year 2006.

993 is a great classic but the 997 is definitely the best 911 ever built.

4-5 years from now they will come out with 998 which will be faster and more advanced than 997.
It will be a better car because of all the engineering and design evolutions.
993 will remain forever as a classic car. will the 997 be a classic porsche?
this remains to be seen.
I'll be sure to find a reason to dislike and condemn both the 998 and its prospective owners. In fact, I dislike the car already. It's tech overload. Give me the raw 997 anyday.
