Default Head light alignment

Since delivery of my 06 997 the headlights have not been in perfect alignment when casting the light outward, i.e. the left is lower then the right, or the right is higher then the left, in any event it doesn’t affect the illumination of the roadway ahead, it just bothers the perfectionist in me.

Today I dropped the car off at the dealer for an oil change service. I asked the service advisor about the alignment and was told that that was how they are set at the factory, something about the light intensity of the xenon headlight not both shining at oncoming vehicles on the same plane. It sounded like a colossal load of BULL**** to me, so I thought I would consult the Rennlist Board since the information here is consistantly more reliable.

Has anyone else noticed their headlights not being in alignment?

interesting, somewhat makes sense in a purely skeptical way as there were lots of complaints about that on HID's. the intention is to scatter the light more like a halogen.

I think it's normal to have the passenger side headlight aimed a bit higher than the driver's side.

Page 279 of your owners manual shows you how to check the alignment. Maybe see if they match up to this.
If not, then you have some leverage at the dealer.

I am glad you posted this. Mine does the exact same thing.....left side lower that the right. I don't like it either because of the perfectionist in me as well.

I thought however it was done intentionally because by lowering the left side, the bright lights won't shine into the windshield of an incoming vehicle. Just my analyses.

The beam spread is designed that way...for oncoming drivers

This also bothered me when I first got mine. It doesn't take long to get used to it. The beam patterns are different with the shutters closed on the left and right headlights. The are both aligned and designed to show more light on the right side of the road and higher on the right side to illuminate curbs and signs. If you have your dealership re-align them, they actually do it by computer and the computer adjusts the leveling. The best way to check if they are aligned properly is to check with your high beams. On high beams with the shutters open, the HIDs are focused very sharper directly ahead and the halogens only provide fill to the sides.

Thank you all for the input, maybe the service advisor was right!
