Question Trade in value - Way too low??

Went to the dealership for appraisal (looking to get a convertible).

Here what they said: $70K

Car is:

- 2006 C2S
- Atlas Grey
- 5500 miles
- Supple leather
- Chrono pack plus
- Bose
- PSE
- Short shifter
- Colored crest
- Porsche Crest in seat
- Power seat package
- Self dimming mirrors

MSRP was $92.5K

MCoupe -
It might be a tad low, but what exactly were you expecting?
Brand new 2006's can be had for 10% or more right now. Heck, I just got one at that.
How much less is it worth if it's used with 5500 miles on it?

Think about how much they are going to put it up for sale on their lot for and then subtract 4-5K. That is probably their high figure on trade in value. I'd say they'd list your car at $77-79K. I'd say you might be able to get a few thousand more out of them but that's about it.

It's the wholesale...retail equation
The dealer is in business to make money...thats the fact of life.

You can pedal the car yourself with all of it's hassles and lookie lous.
(I really like it, can I test drive it, can I have it inspected, ah... not really what I wanted)

You can drive into the dealer, leave the old one and drive away with the new one...all thru, all done.

5500mi..you've not driven it enough
Life is about choices

I think wetstuff is looking for a car like that...

Good luck what ever you decide, if you going to give it to a dealer you could give it to a fellow 911 lover.

You're probably better off trading it in opposed to selling it to someone.
The tax savings on the trade in is huge.

In many states you only pay sales tax on the subtracted difference between the agreed value of your trade and price of the new car. Car dealers leveraged state houses like corn farmers so they can have an advantage over private sales. I gather in VA they got no such deal: your tax is based on the total purchase price. Local rules...

So for example..let's say that the cab that MCoupe wanted to buy was $100,000 and they gave him $70,000K for his car on trade.

He'd only have to pay sales tax on the $30,000 difference. At a sales tax rate of 8% that's a $5,600 savings. So basically if he sold the car outright, he'd have to sell it for $75,600 just to come out even with trading it in for $70K.h

They don't do it that way in California. You must pay Arnold & Co. the full use tax (sales tax) on the full purchase price. However, you may be able to deduct the sales tax you pay on autos from your income tax. I bought and sold many cars last year and according to my tax guy I was able to get a deduction for the sales tax paid and it was quite substantial.

Find a buyer, take them to the dealer, trade the car in on paper, they will keep the cash and apply it to the new car purchase. My dealer has done that twice for me saving a bundle in taxes. They did charge a fee for the paperwork. Approach the dealer and ask them if they will do that. I know not in Calif but this suggestion is for others.

Only if it's above a minimum threshold.

For Tax Yr '05 it was $7000.00 in Kahlifohnia. And I don't remember if only the amount that exceeds that threshold is tax deductable, or the full amount.
