Well, the 997 S is much quicker than my 996. No surprise there. What was surprising was how much better the braking felt on the 997 S.
The most pleasant surprise for me was the difference in the steering. On the 997 S, the steering felt more mechanical than on the 996 (a positive). The 996 steering wheel is almost too easy to turn. I perceived much more feedback from the 997 S steering system than the 996.
I think the interior on the 997 S was more attractive from the standpoint of its stitching and its lines. The interior of the 997 S actually reminded me of the layout and lines of the '87 911's interior. I can see a lot more of the 911 lineage in the 997 than in the 996.
That's about all I could get from 15 minutes in the car, but the differences were significant enough to make me realize that the 997 S is a very different and a better car than the 996.
Compared to my '87 911, well, let's just say the 18 years of technological advances are visually and viscerally obvious. The '87 is slower, more mechanical, and more challenging to drive. The '87 feels lighter and more agile than the larger and heavier 997 S. The '87 is raw and spartan. The 997 is definitely more luxurious but fortunately still edgy and sporty enough for me if the options are kept to a minimum.
