Key word here is Amber Side Marker...that can be clear lens with amber bulb.
There will also be an Amber Reflex reflector

Note: some of the above are craftily built into the headlight assembly.

What looks to be a sidemarker behind the front wheel may indeed be a turn indicator.

Turn your lights on and walk around your car at night...the amber side will show

2002 BMW 4.6 headlamp assembly shown below.

The Porsche amber lenses comply as both amber side marker and amber reflex reflector.

Change out the Porsche ambers to clear and the amber reflex is gone and therefore not in compliance with FMVSS 108.

There is not a car sold in the US that does not have both.
Amber Side & Amber Reflex

either way, your car would look so much better with the clears.

Not talking about headlight assembly. THe M3 front bumper has an amber reflector (that most owners paint over). The M3 also has a sidemarker, clear, with amber bulb that turns on with you signal or with hazards.

sidemarker = clear ok so long as ignites amber
reflector = amber up front, red in back
front lamp indicator = amber
rear lamp indicator = can be clear housing or LED, must light red or amber*

*Volvo got DOT to pass almost off-white bright colored rear indicators. You might notice it on newer models.

But forget all the discussion, simply pull off your clear markers and check the DOT, SAE, Emark stamps on the back!

The Porsche has sidemarkers, not reflectors, as it has a bulb. WHile they are placed very forward on the car they do not fall under the reflector category.

The old M Coupe had the same thing, ugly amber that ignited amber by a white bulb. Easily swapped for Euro clears that also had DOT stamps on them.

You best take a closer look at the Amber Porsche sidemarkers as they are a Reflex reflector as well...a combo, that meets the FMVSS 108 regulation.

Clear do not meet the FMVSS 108 regulation

Every Mfg must comply with FMVSS 108 regulation to sell cars in the US...period.

What you do to the car after the fact is another story.

gmoney99 The car you own and drive is a ...........?

I just took a walk outside the parking lot. Evo, Volvo XC 70, Passat = clear or smoked (in the volvos case) sidemarkers.

Mjones I think you might be interpreting the DOT regulation incorrectly as it seems Volvo, BMW, VW, Mitsubishi would be braking the law otherwise which we all know is not going to happen in so many cases.

There's a Porsche dealer here in So. California that puts clear side markers on all its cars. There is a little sticker next to the window sticker that lists the price at $395! Of course that's not all, LoJack, and paint protection brings the total to almost $2000. I've never bought a car there.

so what happens to the amber lenses when all these dealers replace them?
ahh think about that...

By the way, the GT3 has lumpy rims, both here and in europe, according to the configurator.

Thanks!
Yup, it wasn't all that bad though, I've been out every night and gotten phone numbers each night rather than wasting time on rennlist
