Default OT: Substitute for Audi allroad?

My allroad goes back to Audi at the beginning of October and I haven't got a clue as to what to replace it with.

I don't want to spend more than $50K. I also don't particularly want an SUV, like a Q7, Cayenne or any of the lumbering domestic dinosaurs.

I want something smaller than the allroad as we just don't need the space for just two of us. Ideally it would have height adjustable suspension to get both good handling on road, but also the ability to go down rutted tracks to visit friends and family who live beyond the Borders, 5-cellphone bars, and Starbucks belts of civilization.

Any clues or suggestions?

I'd wouldn't let my "friends and family who live beyond the Borders, 5-cellphone bars, and Starbucks belts of civilization" dictate the car I drive, because otherwise you're basically stuck with another allroad, various Subarus, or a Volvo XC70 for cars that are relatively nice to drive with high ground clearance.

There are rumors that both VW and BMW will be producing sporty coupe/SUV type vehicles, but they're a couple years away.

Grand Cherokee SRT8, around $40K, not too big and I think it can do 0-60 faster than my cab

Lexus GX470, SUV but sized right. Gets 17mpg and change on avg, hauls lots of stuff, great road manners and ride, adjustable suspension firmness and offroads with the best of them. Retains great value and its very reliable.

VW Touareg V8. Nice. Loaded at mid $50k range.

Dunno what happened to the V10 TDI - maybe on hiatus waiting for ultra low sulfur diesel in the US?

Did nobody notice that the guy specifically said he didn't want an SUV?

We replaced our SUV with an Infiniti G35X. It is nice car that is rugged enough to take to the country and go down/up very basic country paths. The AWD system is very simiar to what Nissan uses in their SUV's and works very well in snow, ice and loose aggregate. The clearance is good enogh for our family and we don't miss the SUV at all.

We also looked at the Infiniti FX series. It is a crossover that is easy to drive and also competent in the country. However, my wife hated the shape of the Fx so that did not happen.

Lexus RX400h. My neighbor has one and I like it a lot. But I'm not into SUV at all but if I had to have one, that would be it.

Audi A3?
I really like the S-line Quattro. Doesn't have height adjustable suspension, but then again I don't know of many non SUV cars that do other than the Allroad.

As an alternative, perhaps an S4, BMW 330xi, G35X, MB C Class 4 matic, etc.

New Mazda CX7 or Lexus RX350 for the near sport utility or Lexus IS250AWD or GS350AWD for sedans.

I still love my RX400H, although not for off road, No suspension adjustments!
