The new Targa 4 is up on the Porsche USA website...any thoughts as to why it's only being offered as 4 or 4S, i.e. no 2WD versions? Now there are more 4WD versions of the 997 than 2WD (Turbo/Targa/Coupe/Cab 4WD vs Coupe/Cab 2WD), does this mean that 4WD is the preferred 911 these days ?
I think its just to maintain some kind of exclusivity as they did with the 993 Targa. Also, it's something of an all weather package.
The thing I don't understand is... why didn't they go for a dimmable electro-chromatic roof like those found in some S-class Mercs and the Ferrari 575 SuperAmerica? I would have found an electro-chromatic roof hard to resist...
Actually I think they're going to offer both 2 and 4wd. I've always been a fan of the Targa. I'd be interested to know who else feels the same (i.e. excited to see it in the 997?!?!?)
From the photos published so far, it appears that the real advantage to the Targa, at least from a convenience standpoint, is that the targa roof also opens as a hatchback. Granted, the structural stiffness probably suffers, but an opening hatchback on the 997 may be a really good idea.
If you're a golfer (wanna be or otherwise) the hatchback feature sure comes in handy, at least for for me and my bride .... 2 full sets of clubs with room to spare.
I believe Porsche takes extra measures to stiffen the structure on the Targa.
The extra large "sunroof" is real nice as well.
I think that Porsche probably feels that the Targa markets better in cooler climates, and therefore wanted the all-weather capability of 4WD. Not sure I agree, but I think that may be their thinking.
By the way, the flash animation of the Targa top and sunshade opening and closing on the Porsche website is really cool!
The glass roof is tinted and it comes with a (powered) sunscreen so I haven't found temps. to be an issue, just turn on the a/c with the top closed.
Yesterday it was 95-100 degrees here, I had the top open and windows down, with the a/c on it was just fine. Perhaps the targa traps the cold air (a/c) more than the cab.

I have an '04 996 Targa and love it. I am not too enamored with the T4 (price, weight, mileage, reduction in trunk space) but I'd go for a 997 T2.
