Car and Driver test C6Z06 vs. F430 vs. 997TT....

Does anyone know if the Ferrari F1 auto trans can be run as a full automatic. If so, that explains top gear acceleration. Auto trans cars kick down 2 or 3 gears and provide much better "top gear" acceleration. Given the top gear ratio of the F430 falls between the other two and it's significantly short on torque, I'd guess they allowed the car to kick down in full auto mode to achieve those results.

It's as simple as that. If you've got the dough, and drive on the street, you want the TT. Repeat this comparo in the rain or snow.
Still, amazing performance from the Z06. Rolling start from 5 mph is astounding. TT not even close.
Now, if I really had the dough, it would be the 430, damn everything else. Sex on wheels.

It's the same old time worn principle.......LBS/HP. The TT is OW-needs to shed some lbs. Let's do another comparo when the new GT2 comes out....should be 300/400 lbs lighter.

OK, I'll ask the dumb question:
Why do these cars take longer to get from 5 to 60 than they take to get from 0 to 60? I suppose it's a matter of getting the rpm's up before dumping the clutch from a dead stop vs just pulling away from 5mph?

Another issue in 0-60 vs. street start 5-60 is traction off the launch. The Porsche should have a natural advantage in 0-60 - it's AWD - but at 5-60, it's a closer call. I think 5-60 is a better real-world example of acceleration.
About Ferrari's F1 trans: My only experience with that gearbox is with the 360CS, and that car will positively NOT kick down no matter how badly it's lugging. That car also does not have a fully automatic mode. I don't know if the 430 is different.
An interesting point in the Vette vs. Porsche argument is also the rest of the components. I saw a guy at the track a few weeks ago with a C6 Z06 with Stoptech 6-pistons. I asked him half-jokingly if the OEM brakes weren't enough for him (supposedly the fanciest, biggest brakes ever fitted to a Corvette or somesuch) and the guy was quick and decisive in his condemnation of the OEM brakes. At least when you drive a Porsche, you'll know you have pretty much bombproof brakes.

I didn't realize cars were getting so fast. I will just have to make do with a piddling 355 hp, I guess![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

GM is ALMOST there with the Z06... so, so close to a great drive but not quite yet. They've got the power down, they've got the build quality down... they just need to make the handling and the interior more GT3 RS like. Less bling, more exhaust note, steering so sharp that it would filet fish... and a little more visibility from the drivers seat.
Another perspective is that GM Engineering did precisely what they were told to do: build a car with world class performance for under $70K. Imagine what the Engineers could do if GM marketing told them that the Z's price point has been raised to $100K or better yet the $130K sticker price of a 997TT.
