30 something here, my dad always told me NEVER finance a luxury always pay cash. Most I think would agree a house or regular car is not a luxury, but the 997? oh yeah so I saved my pennies. It kinda sucks because you have to wait and wait and wait, and save, save, save. Whereas a house you buy as soon as you can afford the down payment and can afford the mortgage!

I got this beat into my head as a youngster:
Try as best you can to pay cash for a depreciating item and finance an appreciating item.

Lots of very good advice here but in the end, provided that the cash or finance can be raised, it comes down to personal choice and priorities. As a former boss of mine said on buying a TVR "You're a long-time dead"

This is by far the best advice so far.

Don't buy it unless:
1. You can pay cash for it
2. Your business income allows you a 35% write off on the lease (46% in CA)

or...

3. You have a few months to live and you can't take your money to the grave!

BTW, does anyone know why I paid for membership and yet I am still listed as a registered member?

If you are asking if you should fiance it versus pay cash I think there is another answer. You could drop dead, become diabled or have other adverse event strike you if you are young or old. Long before you have enough to pay cash for the car. You could also end up divorced and lose the money. So if you can get the car and you want that badly, you should get it. If it turns out you can not afford it, you could always sell it.
I was looking for a used 996 before buying my 997S. Ran across two guys in their 70s who bought their 996 but couldn't drive because their backs hurt and they weren't strong enough to work the clutch. Oh, not to mention that the knees wouldn't allow them to get in and out of the car on a daily basis.

So, I plunked donw the extra 40k and got myself the brand spanking new 997S. Yeah, you only live once folks. Can't take the money to your grave.

I agree and while the original post may have been looking for a simple number, the thread shows that personal finance is much more complicated.

If you find out you have cancer I doubt anyone here would say "I should have saved my money and not bought the Porsche" If you can figure out how to pay for it, you only have to figure out if it is worth it to you.

I think i have the "top ramen" syndrome.

I spent so much time living as a student
and cant get out of the habit of spending
as little as possilbe
It is hard to open up the wallet.
I am in my late thirties
no debt
make around 500,000
and i still feel like i cant afford a 997
i guess i should get the car and consider some time with a shrink as well
and become a member

Actually, we already have someone using that line. He's probably busy right now thawing out his frozen car, next to his van, down by the river.
