Thanks Tom. ... She'll look good on top - I mean at the top of my car wash thread.

I've noticed the exact same thing people have been talking about here. I usually give a friendly wave to other 997S drivers, but I've gotten a couple of literally hostile stares back. It almost seems as if some 997S drivers bought the car for its status (what a horror!), and are upset that someone else is driving the same car. Who knows, I can't really seem to think of any other reason for the lack of a return wave, much less an unfriendly look.

As I was heading back home from the Blue Ridge Parkway (down the mountain) on April 3rd through Pisgah National Forest (Rt. 276); around one of the many turns, heading up the mountain to the Parkway was a brown 993 Targa (I think, or Cab). When it dawned on me it was another P-car, I don't see very many here, I raised my arm and began waving wildly (my top was down again after the brief rain I'd outrun above). I looked in my rear-view mirror to see him waving wildly as we both disappeared around the next turns.

I just completed a 4,180 mile road trip up the west coast in a red 928 (<10% interstate). For fun, I gave every Porsche* I saw a little wave. I got two back. One was a grey 996. The other, a light blue 997 cab. (Edgy01--was that you in the Redwoods 8/2?) The wave is dead.

* Every Porsche excludes Cayennes--even 928 guys have standards.

I saw a Boxster in Flint Hill, VA as I was heading towards Rt 211 to Skyline Drive, and he the other direction. I waved, and he lifted his index finger off his steering wheel.

It has to be the right car and the right looking person (Don't ask) and then I will flash the lights. A blond in a boxter does not count.

This is a big topic on the air cooled forum. stating that "the 997 people don't acknowledge us". Good lord, a P is a P and I always blink, wave, etc....

It couldn't have been me! I've never been anywhere NEAR any redwoods...

(this was on 1 August,--was in Oregon on 2 August).

I've been doing it for 15 years....when I'm not in deep thought or completly spaced out I always flash at on-coming P cars.

In SW Ohio, 911s are fairly rare - Boxsters and Cayennes aren't. These owners are clueless as to the tradition. 996s aren't far behind in being oblivious. For some reason, the few 997s that I see, get it. I say this as they are the newest of the new and seem to be reversing the trend.

The 928, 944, and rare 968 crowd are most enthusiastic group.

My wife always makes fun of me for signaling to a fellow p-car owner - she is just jealous that she isn't in the "club".

I always wave and flash, my experience is that the older the Porsche, the more likely they are to flash back. 914 always do, 993 most often do, 996 usually do and 997's occasionally do

I think the makeup of the stereotypical Porsche driver of today has changed dramatically. Yes, Porsches have always been expensive, but unfortunately, it has moved or evolved from being an enthusiast's car to a status symbol for many.

Dan
That probably explains why I see so many near-new 997s at the dealer - 3,000 miles or so, and they're back on the block. The car probably didn't meet the owner's expectations, and he or she is on to the next vehicle...

I do find that owners of older 911s are always up for a wave... probably because they are more likely to own the car for what it can do, not as a status symbol.

Waves are definitely better then headlight flashes, though... we usually reserve head-on flashes for "LEO Ahead!". Of course, if everyone owned a Valentine One...

Its definitely true in my experiences that 996/997 owners are less likely to wave or acknowledge another p-car driver. I find if i notice certain options like PSE or clear marker lights they are more likely to be an enthusiast, not a person looking for a status symbol. Anyone driving a 993 and older either initates a wave or flash or replies. its hit or miss with the newer p-car drivers.

I flash my lights like a maniac if I just passed a cop, but only double flash @ Porsche's.

Saw two 997s yesterday. Flashed my lights at both of them, but no response. I have waved at other 911s and do see folks waving back.

When I had my '80 Fiesta, folks would wave a lot.
