Default 997 Owners and The Machines They Drive For Cruising The Net

Hey it's the weekend and I thought this might be a fun thread. We get to these forums on the machines we drive with our fingertips, and I thought it would be interesting to know what these (fast or POS) machines might be.

We more or less have hinted as to what we use, such as when we occasionally go off topic, as in this post of mine yesterday in an entirely different thread subject:

Of those of you who are considered hard core, raise your hand if you've ever posted in a "modding your 'puter" forum such as me.

In our Mac house:
-The beast: Quad 2.5 GHz PowerPC w/matching memory
-Two 12" Powerbooks
-iMac (wife's home office)

We also keep a Dell laptop around for my wife's odd stats applications that are licensed by her hospital. She is now a Mac convert,...once you go Mac, you never go back!

i've used thinkpads for years so i'm always behind in the speed game being a laptop guy. and now i dont know what to buy next time - since they went chinese.
ibm t42p running wxp, 2gb ram, pentium m 2.00 ghz, 80 gb 5400rpm hd, wireless g built it to a wireless g router on a highbandwidth cable modem
so while you sit uncomfortably at your desk posting on your overclocked pos box i sit in my big easy chair with the ibm sitting on a roll over table posting at my leisure. or if i want i can go lay in a lounge chair out back and use it as well!

I was a PC person for > 20 years, built my own systems etc. Then I virtually gave up desktops and used only laptops with wireless internet which has been great. Don't see the purpose of a desktop anymore. Then 2 years ago I bought an iBook. Ease of use isn't even an issue for me as I had so much experience with DOS, Win 3.1...WIN XP etc. The main selling point for Macs is the (near) absence of viruses. Other than that I actually prefer windows machines just out of 2 decades of habit. Also there is an occasional application (e.g., the one used to program my MX 850 universal remote) that only works with windows.

Yeah that's the one situation where PCs are clearly superior. You don't want to run your games through an emulator while other people are bragging about 100 + FPS game rates. Also this is one situation were desktops with upgradable video cards have the clear advantage over laptops.

Has anyone seen the acer-made "Ferrari" laptops? Time for a Porsche branded laptop for us fanatics.

I was looking for one of these Mac Book Pros with the dual core Intel processors to replace my iBook. Problem is that the bottom of the laptop gets so hot you could flip it over and literally fry an egg on it.

Even the Powerbooks get fairly hot. We use these great iLap holders for both our Mac and PC laptops - it is a great ergonomic way to use your laptop as a real laptop: http://www.raindesigninc.com/ilap.html

You never cease to amuse me, Jeff.

That's not a bad little laptop you've got. Your HD is a bit slow though and is probably the bottleneck in your system, though I don't know if they make them faster for laptops. My current primary HD is a 7200 rpm spinner at 133 MB/s throughput.

My next system which I'm in the process of ordering components as of today will be built around AMD's 64 bit, 3.5 GHz processor. The MOBO will be an ABIT UL8 board, with 8 GB of RAM capability, though I plan to start out with just 1 GB and test performance and add more if it will boost it. My primary HD will probably be a Maxtor 200 GB with Serial ATA 150 MB/s throughput.

My wife's laptop is a Dell, which I bought with my employee discount.

I got 3 rigs all hand built with dual boot fedora core4 and winxp prof, and my wifes Sony Vaio laptop. I used to play a lotta games, ie Everquest (aka. Evercrack), Half-life, Counter-Strike, Nascar 2004... Kinda stopped playing them, maybe will start again later this weekend when the weather in nor calf is supposed to get bad for a while.
