I'd almost rather take my chances on this one. I imagine that they just throw some extra welds on there which might not look so good. Let us know what the fix entails.
Just looked at mine and I'm not too sure how the tips would just randomly fall off. They looked totally reinforced. Hmm, need some more details.

This defect and the design are not as simplistic as one might think. I would refer you all to US Patent 6,913,111 B2 (Mountable Discharge Pipe For An End Muffler As Well As An End Muffler For Motor Vehicle). Filed May 14, 2002 it is a design request that couples several capabilities in one. First, it integrates a special hook for which to attach the end pipe and the pipe itself is designed with a special air-gap-insulated end pipe in order to avoid tarnishing of the double-walled end pipe as a result of thermal linking to the exhaust pipe. "Additional measures, for example, air inlet openings for increased a cooling effect in the end pipe, are provided. "It is one object of the invention to improve linking of a mountable discharge pipe for an end muffler for a motor vehicle such that a simple and rapidly releasable linkage of an end pipe to the end muffler is ensured and fastening takes place so as to largely avoid heat conduction from the end muffler housing to the end pipe, thereby preventing tarnishing of the end pipe which would be visible toward the outside."
Come on you guys! Did you EVER think that any engineering out of Porsche was going to be merely cosmetic or non-utilitarian?

Howcome some are and some aren't on the list? Shouldn't all the S and 4S built during the period between April 2004 and October 2005 have this problem? Afterall, they use the same parts, don't they? By the way, I am wondering whether anyone from this forum have yet experienced a falling exhaust tip? It is kind of embarrassing.

when i spoke to gert carnewal a few months back about ordering a set of chrome exhaust tips for the S, he said they were on backorder due to a new design. he stated that porsche was redesigning the new tips because of a faulty weld. he mentioned this to me about 5 months ago.

Take a look at the small stitch weld on the lower left side of the pic. I'd bet any money that's the suspect weld. The tip is "simply supported" at that point with the leading end cantilevered as it were, and it's easy to see how engine vibrations can induce large bending moments at the weld, leading to the development of stress cracks and eventual failure. In fact, in my pic there it almost looks like I'm developing a stress crack already!
Btw, someone PM'd me about how I polished my tips to look like chrome. Here's the link if anyone else is interested:

This threadn has me thinking that the X51 package is worth it if for no other reason than the fact it comes with REAL quad tail pipes.
Fake quads.....what was Porsche thinking?

Now the switches, gadgets, "TV" screen, and f'ing fake quads, p*ss me off when I see them in a bad mood.
I looooove those early 911s, especially their interiors!

Yea,--and the Japanese give us everything we want in the way of gadgets! That's what's driving Porsche to add all this non-functional stuff.
It all started with drink holders! Now pseudo quad tips. What will they do next? Things have come along way,--and I bought my first new 911 in 1977.
