I know ... you already hate me for bring this topic up again, but I cannot find the thread with the photos and diagrams to do the "muffler bypass". I know how to do it, but I want to be able to show a fabricator/welder. Can anyone point me to that thread? I can't find a search option.
When I stand on it, my car puts off a beautiful howel inside the car. Outside, you can hardly hear it. I'm guessing what I'm hearing is intake resonators... but I will die if my exhausts are not louder soon. The mod I'm looking for was just a simple pipe welded to bypass the mufflers on each side.
Love your car.... looks exactly like mine except for the wheels. It takes a REAL man to own a black Porsche! LOL! I use the Mr. Clean carwash gun....and it dries spotless. Filtered water is nice!
OK, checked them out and they are different on the 997. For one thing the diameter of that tiny pipe wouldn't let much exhaust or sound out. That thread is on here somewhere. Isn't there a search function on Rennlist?

Fabspeed has a nice exhaust video that shows how porshe actually put a more restrictive header on the 3.8 than the 996 3.6 had, very interesting. Fabspeed stuff is the real deal, I'm a believer now.
Well, I can't thank you guys enough for steering me there. They have the exact bypass system I am looking for and it's only about $300. It takes 125 pounds or so off the back of the car (which it desperately needs). It sounds soooooo good! Also gives you about 25 hp. So lightening the car and gaining horsepower can't be bad.... especially the way they sound. Oh, there is no hacking or welding. It's all bolt on. I'm ordering mine now!
Just be aware that it is very loud, much more so than the sound bites. Open header loud. I would suggest you try the fabspeed mufflers instead, plenty loud ,but not rediculous. I have the bypass pipes for the track only, couldn't imagine them on a daily driver.
That loud, eh? Well, maybe I'll think about it some more. It sure does sound good in the video clip.
Maybe I'll go back to my original idea of welding in a straight pipe to bypass the muffler....but leave the muffler on. Some of the exhaust will still go through the muffler so it shouldn't be too horribly loud.
I think those muffler bypasses are going to be loud, but freakin' awesome.

HEH HEH.... why spend the money though? I just talked to a friend who will make them for me out of stainless and install them for $200 !!! Hard to go wrong with a price like that! He's a Porsche mechanic! ...errrr....surgeon.

I'll make some video sound bites when I get the pipes on. How about 0 to 150 ....HARD on the gas?! <grin> It will probably be next wed or thurs before he can get to it. If every single Harley Davidson in Daytona can run straight pipes.... I don't think I'll ever be noticed.
There was a comment in an article about the 997 in a recent edition of Excellence magazine. It cautioned against making an ill-advised modification to an otherwise balanced car that will adversely effect driving pleasure. An excessively loud exhaust is a perfect example. It sounds great sometimes, but can easily become an aggravation. Many of the available aftermarket mufflers are very loud. A muffler meeting "Tuv" criteria will not be OK for daily driving. "Export" mufflers are loud. Installing cats and headers will increase the noise, even with stock muffler. Many aftermarket systems are of poor quality and may also be manufactured by others. It has been said by some sources that 100 cell cats, after a while, will trip the check engine light, rendering the car unable to pass emission inspections. The final dilemma is spending a great deal of money to purchase and install this wonderful exhaust and have to pay to put the stocker back on. Good luck.
Anyone with the Fabspeed exhaust care to comment on the feel of the car. I am concerned that the low-end torque suffers (the dyno printout on their web cite seems to be consistent with this fear). I had a VR6 GTI that became very soft and felt slower once I changed that throttle body and exhaust (despite Neuspeed’s claimed power increases).
I am just look for some info, anecdotal or otherwise. Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you! BTW, there is no emission control check in Florida. We don't have any kind of vehicle inspection or I wouldn't be able to drive my hand made tube chasis VW sand rail....with open headers. Oh, and it has no f ront brakes either. We have a great time driving it to the beach during the summer. Never been stopped once in 20 years!
You neglect to notice also that I have someone to build the stainless bypass pipes for me. This will be about a $200 mod. If it is raspy, horible, devoid of tourque and power and explodes into flames.... then I'll change it back. Otherwise I expect to hear
997 symphony music out my exhausts. Now that they've uncovered how they make their cold air intake....I'm going to copy that too to make the resonators stay wide open so you can hear them inside the car all the time. I detest the thought of fake engine sounds manufactured to sound like an older car's exhaust. My car's exhaust will sound like it should....not the intake, for god's sake! There.... I feel a bit better!
I made a mistake in my post yesterday. The "Tuv" mufflers are compliant with european sound regulations and are quite suitable for everyday use.
Here in New York, cars have to be inspected yearly, including emissions. A check engine light fails the car. The notification of the failure goes to the DMV and they will eventually cancel your registration unless you prove it passed inspection. The cops around here have an amazing ability to spot expired inspection stickers and parking enforcement personnel can also issue tickets for expired inspection or registration sticker. Attention we don't need.
One of the salesmen where I bought my car has straight pipes on his Porsche and they sound great, but are just too loud for every day use. He gets stopped often.
The people encouraging us to do all these wonderful modifications to our Porsches don't have to pay for them and don't have to live with the consequences.
