Since I'm obsessing about Cabs I should ask "What's not to like?" If you own a Cab what are the downsides of ownership vs. the Coupe?

I don't own a cab, but I love convertibles. I know that I'll be going to the track often, so the cab's benefit (top-down motoring) was offset by its added weight, decreased structural rigidity, and reduced roll protection compared to a coupe. It's also too hot in Florida most of the year to enjoy a cab. So I ordered a coupe.
That said, though, a buddy of mine tracks his 996C4 cab all the time with hoosier slicks (not r-comps). He's fast, and he enjoys the cab on the track top-down. Just not my cup of tea.
But if you're on the street most of the time and the benefits outweigh the costs, go for it. 997 cabs are great-looking cars.

With a 997, none that I know of. Sure, there may be a bit of occasional rattling of the soft top, and occasional drops of water in the cabin when you wash it, but I am totally satisfied with my purchase. Speaking of tracking, the 997 cabs have pop-up rollbars, and at the track near us (BeaverRun near Pittsburgh) you cannot track your cab with the top down.

There's a downside if your goal is to put your kids in back. The rear seats on the cab have a forward-lean. On the coupe, the seat-backs are vertical. Took my kids to the dealership and they looked like little Quasimodo's back there. Bought a coupe.

A drive down the California coast in a cab is a truly great experience - there's not much else like it. The downsides of cab ownership: squeaks and rattles, chassis flex, lots of noise with the top up from the wind and external sounds, limited track use, top mechanism malfunctions and increased threat of break-ins and vandalism. I also think that, while the 997 cab looks great, it does lose some of the character and lines that make the 911 silhouette so beautiful.
Do I enjoy riding in cabs? Absolutely. Would I own another one? Nope. It's a very personal decision so decide if it's really right for you. For me, I hate the "exposed" feeling you get when you're in traffic in a cab. I also like a much more rigid chassis.
I'm not sure what the top-down options are in Chicago but, as nkhalidi said, if benefits outweigh the costs, go for it. 997 cabs are fantastic looking cars.

There is nothing better than a top down drive on a summer night or a fall day, make the drop top a Porsche and it's almost unfair to all the other drivers on the road.
However, the lines of the coupe are much nicer.

I had a 997 coupe which I really, really liked but I love my 997 cab. No squeaks, rattles, body flex. None of the traditional 'negatives' of a cab. Only the 'mirror whistle,' which I can eliminate by either turning up the stereo or raising the passenger window. I have an email into the dealer (350 mi. away) who is working on a fix.
There's a lot of things I love about my cab, not the least of which is how easy it is to put the top up or down, even while moving at speeds up to 35 mph. This capability really expands the number of opportunities for top down driving.
Best car I've ever owned!

The Cab is outstanding. The design minimizes the wind noise, anything under 80 is easy to get used to. With heated seats any clear day is a top down day. Almost 2,000 miles and have never driven it with the top up yet..not bad for the northwest....Get the CAB!!!!!!
