Default A "smelly" but burning topic.

My 997S has about 550 miles now. I have noticed a somewhat burning smell after parking the car in the garage. This follows relatively normal driving, perhaps with a few minutes at around 4000 rpm intermixed with variable engine speeds during the break-in procedure. All temperatures look good and I have not had any warning messages from the PCM central

Is this just cosmolene (spelling?) burning off?

Thanks for your input.

Don't worry about it, IMO. Unless you see smoke, that is. It could be what you suspect (Kramerlene) or you could have splashed some road tar or run over a plastic bag on or near exhaust system. Something like that.

I'm at 300 miles and I get the same smell. It amazing that even on a short drive the rear compartment will stay warm for hours. In fact, I never put that cover on that part of the car until I'm ready to turn in for the night.

Same here, decreased some now at 1500 miles; was stronger smell for first 500 miles-- cosmoline burning off, maybe a bit of clutch break-in. It's perfectly normal, experienced same fragrance when my old M3 was new first 1K miles, even when driven in a civilized way.

I think it's the catalytic converter getting broken in. I've had the experience on a number of new Porsche and non-Porsche cars.

All a part of that "NEW Car Smell"

Nothing to worry about!

The cat convertor has a "rotten egg" smell. I had a C class many years ago that had this until I traded it in at 50 K miles. Never went away.

That smell is a defective cat... not to be confused (not that it can... awful smell) with cosmoline

Yep, if the car smells like rotten eggs, you have to bring it back in and have the cat checked out.
Make sure that you fuel up with unleaded only!

The other smell, seems like the same smell I had when it had a few hundred miles on the clocks.
