Just under 4000 on my C2 and added 1/2 qt at about 800 miles..... no indication of any oil use since then. Not "babied"..... but not always driven to redline either. Mix of stop & go city driving and freeways.

Keep using the 0w40 in hot climates and you'll be burning more oil after 50,000 miles when the bearings are no longer within tolerances.

The point I am making is these engineers have learned their trade primarily from books and theory studies. Many of us have learned ours by actuallly doing and subsequently learned what is good and what is bad for an engine. Of course these are my opinions, but they are based on more than 35 years of first hand experience.

I just love these vast generalizations.

And Porsche never actually test drives these cars,--it's all book and theory.

I have just over 3200 miles on my car and am not afraid of redlining the engine routinely. I have put 3 litres into the car over this period.

And I have been driving Porsches for 32 years.

So what does driving a Porsche for 32 years have to do with knowledge of how to operate an engine properly? Follow my breakin religiously and you will greatly reduce or eliminate all oil burning. Anyone who accepts burning 1 liter of oil every 1000 miles as normal obviously has little experience in quality engine buillding or how an engine operates.

Rather than considering my recommendation as witchcraft, what do you have to lose following it? It sure won't be more oil.

How many 997 engines have you been into? How many 996 engines?

Why should anyone listen to you over Porsche?

What is your engineering degree in?

Are you a Porsche mechanic? Assuming 35 years as one,--right?
(I'll appreciate your inputs a lot more if you just enlighten me!)

One other thing I do to keep my 997s sipping rather than gulping oil:

I keep the oil level limit 1 bar below the top.

To gpk: is it possible you may have accidently added too much oil and are now leaking oil around the gaskets? its worth a check in my opinion.

Your experience with the Porsche brand is indisputable and I will readily admit to being a newcomer to the marque but having to add three liters of oil in just 3,200 miles sounds excessive to me regardless of the make or engine configuration.

Just turned 650 flawless and joyous miles on the 997TT and the bar just finally dropped one notch. I picked up a quart of Mobil 1 0-40W at Kragen's and will add a few ounces, per the book and bring the bar back up.

Life will go on as usual. Thanks for listening.

I agree with you. 3 litres appears high to me. i'm hoping it will settle down in the next several thousand.

Good link here on guage accuracy. In 4K miles, I've used 12 oz of oil

https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...il+consumption

I only add 4 oz at a time, then re-check the level. Also, don't add oil the first time you see it down. (note the info in the above link)

And you mean the guys at Rusnak didn't give you a couple of qts when you bought the car? Got 'em to throw in 2 qts with mine, and clear side markers too.

Will do. Was going to buy it at Rusnak, until I discovered my order date was moved out. I found mine at Porsche of Huntsville in Alabama and had it trucked in last month.

Hey I drive my car hard each time I take it out. I broke it in according to Porsche911's recommendations and I have only added a quarter of a 1/4 over 7000 miles. She runs great.

I have followed all the postings re oil consumption on this and other forums and have come to one conclusion: There appears to be no relationship between how the car is "broken in" and whether it uses oil or not. I have gone to 5-40 and am seeing less oil use but will switch back to 0-40 next change to verify whether it is visc. or breakin milage at play here. For anyone using more oil than they are happy with I suggest you try bumping the lower # up to 5 and report back. I think you will see an improvement. Good driving.

Doesn't work for me. Driving on the street, I consume extremely little. Running hard on the track, I'll consume as much as a quart a day with 2-2.5 hours of track driving.

I just switched over to 15w-50 too. IMHO the 0w-40 is too thin for these cars in most conditions.

FYI

The owners manual for the 997TT states, 0-40, 5-40 or 5-50w oils. Having a tough time finding the 5-40 or 5-50 Mobil 1.

Any suggestions on where to buy the 5-40 or 5-50w Mobil 1?
