Hi
I recently sold my '02 Z06, and I am now deciding which car I want to move up into. I love the turbo for its awd and easy power gains, while I love the 997S for its relative simplicity, and clean lines. I will be using this car mostly as a daily driver, with some driving events at Summit Point mixed in - I am buying a '66 912 to really learn to drive/hopefully club race with. Thanks!

Isn't the 997S performance similar to the 996TT? Not unless you can get a hell of a deal on a 996TT I'd take the 997S over it any day. Try both to compare and see what one does it for you.

I'm facing a similar dilemma. I like the dry sump racing engine in the 996TT and the capacity and relative ease of future power upgrades, but I really cant get over the busyness of the cars lines. The rear fender intakes are nice looking, but I really cant get over the 996TT nose. It looks like its kind of stuck on there as an afterthought and really messes up the flow of the car.
Is there a better nose for the 996TT?

I drove a 996, a 997 then a 996TT back to back to back. Then I thought about it for a month and talked to people. The 996TT is significantly heavier than the 996 or 997 but the rush when the turbo spools up is awesome. I ended up deciding on the 997 S because I wanted a lighter car (relatively speaking), 2wd and I liked the interior better (more comfortable to my frame). I got the turbo brakes, normally aspirated power, 2wd, less complexity and a nicer interior. I gave up turbo power, awd and they dry sump engine (that was difficult).
For me I don't regret my decision at all.

Short answer: No. Marketing hype to describe a wet sump... Search the forum on this... lots of info here and in the 996 forum...

I would take a 996TT over 997S but test drive both. 996TT is a pretty reliable car, unlike other turbo cars. I would try to stay with 01-02 MY.
997S has been highly rated from the NA guys. It's simplicity and lower weight is hard to beat. You'll have a full warranty but will be exposed to RMS risk when 4 yrs is up.
996TT is much loved by turbo guys. It's price will be further dropped when 997TT is out. Besides 997TT is supposed to have much more power than 996TT. However, if you like 996 stying and can find a good example for cheap, I wouldn't hesitate.

I'd take the TT any day. There are a number of reasons:
1. AWD. It's all about the traction!
2. Faster (I've heard people say the 997S is just as fast, but it's not. Just look at the 0-60, 30-90 times, etc. Nurburgring times only matter if you're going to driving that track with the car.)
3. Better resale value. The NA 997 is going to take the same price hit the 996 did due to over production.
4. No RMS problems
5. Much more power available through upgrades (it's a turbo!)
If you need any more reasons, let me know.

Just a few words about the reliability of the 996TT: mine now has over 216'000km, and I'm going to replace the original clutch next week. Since the car saw its share of track events, I'm amazed how long the clutch did its job! The rest of the engine has been bulletproof, except for a few minor things. Details here: http://www.911turbo.com/feature/2003-12/index.php (a bit outdated though...)

I drove four different 996TT's BEFORE I even looked at the 997S. The main selling points for me on the 997 were: Shifter (sport shift option), interior, engine sound, stereo (Bose option), and new design changes, especially the headlights. Absolutely no regrets on my 06 C2S purchase----only grins and some feeling of relief in my choice.
