Sorry to hear but glad you are OK. (But get checked out because being hit that hard, it is very possible you are injured at least slightly - you will probably wake up with some aches and pains tomorrow.)
Assuming its not totaled (and I bet there is a fair chance it is), then the dimunition in value will be substantial - I would guess 10-25%. If you push that hard early on, there may be a better chance they will total the car, which would be the best result for you (as I'm sure you already know).
Good luck!

I bought the car, was planning on keeping it for life, I wish it was driven over a cliff now. They won't be able to fix it right. I have a loan, rather not get into too much financial detail, let's just say I owe less than what I could have sold it for.

I predict your car will not be totalled and that you will not be reimbursed for the depreciated value. Geico knows that Geico is not going to sue themselves. You have very little negotiating power against an insurance company who will spend hundreds of thousands to not set a precedent of reimbursing you for market loss.
They will pay your doctor bills but don't expect much in the way of pain and suffering, either.
I had a similar incident myself and got nothing because (I feel) that the other guys insurance company was the same as mine.
Having said that, sue the ba...rd !

The smell was likely not the airbag system, or you would have seen the deployed bag hanging out of the steering wheel hub, passenger-side dash and/or the doors/seats. The 997 may have seatbelt pre-tensioners which typically carry a small explosive charge that forces the seatbelts to tighten when sensors are activated. That may be the smell.

jvmca is right, that smell is likely the seatbelt tensioners. My wife and I were rear ended in her Mercedes once, hard enough to make them go off. Feeling those things pull us back into our seats to prevent whiplash was both scary and reassuring at the same time. Same smell after our accident. I don't know if then are moving towards making them standard equipment on all cars, but I'm a big fan.
As far as the car goes, I think it counts the teat belt tensioners as airbags as far as the onboard computer is concerned. As we thought after our accident, it's nice to only have to worry about the impact the accident had on the car. Bittersweet, but better than the alternative.

was rear ended in the 993, same scenario (not @ all as hard though) & though the police did not want to write a report b/c they felt there was little visible damage on the rear bumper... i insisted & to my surprise (upon fix) there was over $10k in damage... bumper, bumper shocks, cat. conv. was slightly bent.
-good you have witnesses, hopefully a police report too.
be interesting to hear what your 997s tallies @. sounds pretty severe.

4. Trans. parts - 3,500 to 8,000 (big unknown)
5. Frame straightening - 4,000 (big unknown, incl. welding)
6. Right rear lights - 1,200
7. Engine parts - 500 to 3,000 (big unknown)
8. Miscell. - 300 (gas charges for seat belt tensioners, etc...)
A reasonable estimate then is about $25K, with the possibility of being much more. I'll push hard to demand it's done perfectly just like it's from Germany, definitely laser frame straightening as needed, and at a Porsche Collision Center.

Good luck Steve. You have to careful out there. I'm glad that you're okay and healthy. You will always be able to rebuild your car. My hopes is that they will total it. There is no way you can bend a frame back to original specs. Tell them to give you a check and order a new one. That's why you have insurance.

Steve --
I don't know anybody who's been rear-ended at 40 miles an hour while stopped who didn't have at least some neck pain within the first 5 days after being hit. Get seen immediately by a physician even if its in an emergency room, to document your health and get a cervical spine x-ray series. - -- Car accidients have a not-so-funny way of catching up with you later in terms of aches and pains, early degenerative arthritis, etc. Glad you weren't seriously injured.
Second, it sucks that both of you have geico, but don't give up! Badger them until they can take it no longer. This is not just a car, it's like a piece of art and I know that's probably how you treat it. It is worth your time and effort to maximize your reimbursement. As a high-end car purchaser they will want to keep your business.
Good luck -- post the pics.
