A sales rep at the local dealership is selling his own used 2005 997S (he received it in Oct '04) through the dealership. It has about 6,000 miles and he's asking for $79,000 (not including tax + dealership fees) with the following info/options...
2005 997S (original MSRP + destination charge = $85,360)
Seal Grey exterior
Stone Grey Standard Leather interior
M6A Stone Grey floor mats
640 Sports Chrono
P15 Power Seats
Heated front seats
446 Wheel Caps with Colored Crest
680 Bose High End Sound
Unfortunately, it doesn't have some other options I would have ordered (navigation, 19" classic wheels, Porsche crest in headrest).
Please let me know if you think this is a good price for this car. I've already tried to bring him down a bit, but so far he's resisting.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

Sounds fair.....How are the tires and has he had any issues with it?
I wonder what he paid for it being an employee? I have a feeling he is trying to get close to his cost on it.....Market might allow it!
Ide get a new 06 when one falls out or buyer backs out....

If it's a keeper, get the 06, and get the options you really want; you'll also have an extra year of warrranty. If you figure that a Porsche is going to cost 50% of the purchase price (depreciation) over 5 years you won't go far wrong IMO.

Depends on your market, here there aren't any available slots for a new 997 for a long while. If you really want it, I bet you could negotiate the price a bit. If not, just wait for a car to your specs.

I would go for the '06 the way you want it. Now, if you were saving a ton of cash I might be able to justify; however, if you wanted Nav then you should order a car with Nav. Life is too short, yada yada yada...

Doc, I was in a very similar circumstance.
You are in a different part of the country, but with your list of options in hand, call (or preferably, visit the local dealers -- Houston now?) all TX, LA and MS dealers. Someone will have an '06 model Sept/Oct. incoming delivery which is unsold/cancelled order and still modifiable to get the opts you want. I secured a good deal this way on a soon-to-be-delivered 997S on someone else's cancelled allocation.
Or, go back offer $74 or $75 on the Seal Grey '05, for a couple $thousand more get the Nav module installed as tequipment ...it's still wired for Nav even if Nav is not factory ordered http://www2.us.porsche.com/isapi/eng...+Communication . The salesman may accept, especially if you are sitting across the desk from him with checkbook in hand. He knows the '06 models are arriving within weeks. Best of luck.

Thanks much for everyone's ideas and suggestions. Really appreciate it.
I've tried to negotiate a lower price with the salesman several times already, but he refuses to budge.
I'll probably call some other dealers and see if anyone has backed out of a upcoming order.
Otherwise, I'll just order a new '06 and wait the 6 months, I guess.
Thanks again.

Why set yourself up for worry? Patience is a virtue..and you'll be covered by the lemon laws, if anything goes wrong on a new one (not the case with a used one).
Maybe it is a car that was flaked, knowing it was only going to be kept a short time.
If the car was really cheap then this might make up for some of the added risk...but that's not the case here.

I think the price is a bit strong, but finding a 997, let alone an "S", is really difficult at this time.
Bargin him down and get the Certified Pre Owned warranty...that is worth somthing.
Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned vehicle comes with the Porsche Approved Limited Warranty coverage of up to 6 years/100,000 miles (* see details below), plus Porsche Roadside Assistance, an exclusive support service that offers added security when travelling.
(*If qualifying pre-owned Porsche vehicle is purchased while still under new-vehicle warranty maximum coverage is 6 years, 100,000 miles from original in-service date)
