Default Oil Pressure

I have 800 miles on my new 997 S. Since I've had it, I frequently check the oil pressure. It's always been pegged to the top at 60lbs. Today, I was sitting in traffic idling, and I glanced at the oil pressure guage and it read about 25lbs. It scared the heck out of me. I kept my eye on it and when I got to normal driving speed it was pegged at 60lbs again. I hope it is because I just never looked at it while idling. I've checked the oil and it is nearly full.

What are the rest of you reading at an idle in similar cars?

Thanks,

Buzz

This has been posted before so a quick search might help settle your nerves...I get a top of the scale reading at speed and 2.5 at idle. I have seen several dicussions and this seems to be normal. Enjoy the ride

That sounds very normal to me. As the engine breaks in, warm idle oil pressure usually drops.

Indeed, there are a few words spend on this topic a few months ago.

I currently see 2.4 bar on the dial at warm and idle, and is indeed pegged at speed.

Whew!

Thanks a lot for the quick feedback on this. I guess I never looked at it at an idle before. I'm a newbie Porsche owner... and I've found this site to be the best source of information I can find.

Thanks!

So, now you are over this oil pressure shock.

What about your coolant and oil temperature and your tire pressures? Make yourself an owner of the numbers and check them out regularly, so that you understand changes and act when needed.

PV, is right. Check your readings regularly so you know when its out of the norm. Also invest in a good, reliable tire pressure gauge to monitor your tires. Take care, enjoy your ride and don't get too stressed.

Thanks, PV....and Jay. I do check everything regularly... Oil is checked before each cold start, and I'm constantly scanning the gauges. I guess I just never looked at the oil pressure at an idle. Thanks again for the info.
